Ft. Totten Historic Site Devils Lake North Dakota Native American School
Fort Totten State Historic Site stands today much as it stood when first erected in 1867. It was built to protect overland transportation and supply routes. Many of the Lake Region pioneers settled here by way of the Fort Totten military post. In 1890, the military post was decommissioned and from 1891-1935 it served as a Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding School. Faded murals from this era reflect everyday life of the school children and can still be seen adorning the walls of several buildings. The Fort also served briefly as the preventorium for residents with tuberculosis. In 1940 it was returned to an educational facility and serves as a grade school and high school for the Fort Totten Community until 1959. In 1960, the Fort became a state historical site and continues in that role today. Many visitors come each year to walk the grounds and enter the original buildings experiencing the past. You will find the Interpretive Center, The Plummer's Store, The Little Theatre, Traveling Exhibits, Pioneer Daughter's Museum
he museum is staffed daily from mid-May to mid-September from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is included in the Fort Totten State Historic Site fee. Telephone: (701) 766-4346

Fort Abercrombie North Dakota Wild Rice River Day 8 of 90 Day Video Challenge
Find out how I worked along the Wild Rice River today, near the Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site.
The Wild Rice River flows through Fort Abercrombie North Dakota. Fort Abercrombie was an active traders fort in the early 1860's. The sounds of the river have always calmed me and brought peace within. I live 15 miles South of the fort. In Breckenridge Minnesota. Also along where three rivers meet. I enjoy getting outdoors, along the Wild Rice River banks, and just taking it all in.
Besides the Wild Rice River, and the Fort, Abercrombie can boast as being a State Historic Site. North Dakota land near the rivers was populated by American Indians. This was due to the ease of being able to travel along the Wild Rice River in canoes. Fort Abercrombie was a popular trading fort for the soldiers.
The Old Soldiers Fort buildings still stand in Fort Abercrombie, North Dakota. It's a perfect spot for visitors, travelers, or even for a family outing. You can picnic near the Wild Rice River after visiting the buildings and museum. I remember visiting the Fort when younger. You get a good feel of what it was like to live back in the 1860's.

RAVS South Dakota Summer 2014
This past summer I went on a two week trip to South Dakota with about 30 vet students, 10 Veterinarians, and a handful of technicians and volunteers. We helped over 900 animals that may have never or will never receive medical care again. Thank you for everyone who helped make this trip possible!!
