Kiyomizu-dera is an independent Buddhist temple founded in the early Heian period. The temple dates back to 798. But its present buildings were constructed in 1633. The UNESCO World Heritage site is definitely worth checking out. Interestingly enough it was built without the use of one nail. The temple took its name from the waterfall within the complex, which runs off the nearby hills. Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water. The main hall has a large veranda, supported by tall pillars, that juts out over the hillside and offers impressive views of the city. The temple complex contains several other shrines. Of interest to many is the Jishu-jinja, dedicated to Okuninushino-Mikoto, a god of love and good matches.
Jishu-jinja has a pair of love stones placed 18 metres apart, which lonely visitors attempt to walk between with their eyes closed. If you are successful in reaching the other stone, with your eyes closed -- of course - it is taken as a sign that he or she will find love.
To experience more of Kyoto's culture, take a nice walk from the temple down to Gion, a street from the past. Here, you can still spot many old-style Japanese houses here called machiya, which roughly translated means townhouse although some of them are ochaya or tea houses. This street is so nostalgic that you can even spot geishas or maikosan, as they are called in Kyoto, in their full regalia. By the way, Maikosan means artist or person of the arts.
