Gori is a city in eastern Georgia, which serves as the regional capital of Shida Kartli and the centre of the homonymous administrative district. The name is from Georgian gora that is, heap, or hill.
Gori was an important military stronghold in the Middle Ages and maintains a strategic importance due to its location on the principal highway connecting eastern and western parts of Georgia. In the course of its history, Gori has been invaded by the armies of regional powers several times. The city was occupied by Russian troops during the 2008 Russia–Georgia war.
Gori is also known as the birthplace of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

Uplistsikhe occupies an area of about 20 acres along the bank of the Mtkvari River.
Crowning the settlement is a basilica which was built in the ninth and tenth centuries.
Whereas the church was constructed of stone and brick, many of the other buildings were carved into the rock.
The city has structures from a variety of cultures, from the Iron to Medieval Ages.
Uplistsikhe is no longer inhabited, which makes it open to exploration by visitors.

It was founded in the 5th century BC and was the ancient capital of Iberia. It lies at the confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi.
