While Hungary is famous for its goulash and paprika (which, by the way, originated in the New World), it’s known for much more than that, including world-class fine wines and its pear liqueur, an orange-colored sweet dessert treat, sometimes known as palinka.
Visitors to Hungary quickly learn it is a land of many cultures, having been ruled over by the Romans, Ottomans, Mongols, Magyars, Czechs and the Soviets. Remains of Roman fortifications can be found as can utterly spectacular buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. Gyor is about an hour and a half drive west from Buapest. Gyor is known as the city of rivers and its one of the prettiest places you can visit in Hungary. Its like stepping back in time with all the cobblestone streets and Baroque buildings. Its known as the city of rivers flowers and festivals as proven by an abundance of all three. There are also modern streets for shopping and delightful settings for dining like restaurant La Mareda. Gyor also has a strong connection with Ireland as there is a painting of the weeping Irish Madonna in the local church which was brought over to the town by an Irish priest. Thousands of people come here every year to pray at this painting.
Hungary is steeped in Culture and has eight UNESCO world heritage sights.
