Southampton the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, on the south coast of England, and is sited around 62 miles south-west of London. Southampton is a major port and lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the confluence of the River Test and River Itchen. The town itself has an estimated population of 231,200.
This video covers my visit to the city preceding my 28-day voyage on the Sea Princess. The video begins along the River Test and the port area. Next I walk through downtown, around the Civic Centre, past the Bargate and through a city park.

Southampton is a port city on England’s south coast. It’s home to the SeaCity Museum, with an interactive model of the Titanic, which departed from Southampton in 1912. Nearby, Southampton City Art Gallery specialises in modern British art. Solent Sky Museum features vintage aircraft like the iconic Spitfire. Tudor House & Garden displays artifacts covering over 800 years of history, including a penny-farthing bike.
Southampton on the south coast of England, is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire. Southampton is 75 miles (121 km) south-west of London and 19 miles (31 km) north-west of Portsmouth. Southampton is a major port and the closest city to the New Forest. Southampton lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the confluence of the Rivers Test and Itchen, with the River Hamble joining to the south of the urban area.
Significant employers in the city include the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University, Southampton Airport, Ordnance Survey, BBC South, the NHS, ABP and Carnival UK. Southampton is noted for its association with the RMS Titanic, the Spitfire and more generally in the World War II narrative as one of the departure points for D-Day, and more recently as the home port of a number of the largest cruise ships in the world. Southampton has a large shopping centre and retail park, Westquay. In 2014, the city council approved a follow-up from the Westquay park, WestQuay Watermark (now known as Westquay South) and construction began in January 2015.
The geography of Southampton is influenced by the sea and rivers. The city lies at the northern tip of the Southampton Water, a deep water estuary. Southampton is home to Southampton Football Club—nicknamed The Saints—the club plays in the Premier League at St Mary's Stadium .
Southampton is a major UK port which has good transport links with the rest of the country. Southampton is also served by the rail network, which is used both by freight services to and from the docks and passenger services as part of the national rail system. Southampton Airport is a regional airport located in the town of Eastleigh, just north of the city. Cunard ships are regularly launched in the city, for example Queen Victoria was named by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in December 2007, and the Queen named Queen Elizabeth in the city during October 2011. The Duchess of Cambridge performed the naming ceremony of Royal Princess on 13 June 2013. While Southampton is no longer the base for any cross-channel ferries.

Portsmouth, Hampshire, England - city tour
Portsmouth is a port city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. Located mainly on Portsea Island, 110 km south-west of London and 31 km south-east of Southampton, it is the United Kingdom's only island city.
The city's history can be traced to Roman times. A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth has the world's oldest dry dock and was England's first line of defence during the French invasion in 1545. Special Palmerston Forts were built in 1859 in anticipation of another invasion from continental Europe. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered the world's greatest naval port at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. The world's first mass production line was set up in the city, making it the most industrialised site in the world. During the Second World War, the city was a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings and was bombed extensively in the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people. In 1982, the city housed the entirety of the attacking forces in the Falklands War. Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia left the city to oversee the transfer of Hong Kong in 1997, which marked for many the end of the empire.
Portsmouth is one of the world's best known ports. HMNB Portsmouth is the largest dockyard for the Royal Navy and is home to two-thirds of the UK's surface fleet. The city is home to some famous ships, including HMS Warrior, the Tudor carrack Mary Rose and Horatio Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory. The former HMS Vernon naval shore establishment has been redeveloped as a retail park known as Gunwharf Quays. Portsmouth is among the few British cities with two cathedrals: the Anglican Cathedral of St Thomas and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Evangelist. The waterfront and Portsmouth Harbour are dominated by the Spinnaker Tower, one of the United Kingdom's tallest structures at 560 feet. Nearby Southsea is a seaside resort with a pier amusement park and medieval castle.
Portsmouth International Port is a commercial cruise ship and ferry port for international destinations. The port is the second busiest in the United Kingdom after Dover, handling around three million passengers a year. The University of Portsmouth enrols 23,000 students and is ranked among the world's best modern universities. Portsmouth is also the birthplace of author Charles Dickens and engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Located on a quiet dead end street just a few blocks outside the city walls, we could not recommended any place more highly.

Stanford-le-Hope is a town and Church of England parish situated in the county of Essex, England. The town is within the unitary authority of Thurrock and located 23.8 miles east of Charing Cross in London. Its principal claim to fame is that Joseph Conrad lived and wrote there. Unlike some other areas of Thurrock, Stanford-le-Hope is surrounded by countryside and farmland. The town is served by Stanford-le-Hope railway station.
Often known locally simply as Stanford, the town is home to many commuters working in London, thanks to its proximity to the capital and its c2c-operated London, Tilbury and Southend Railway rail connections. Until recently the town benefited from two refineries located on the nearby Thames, Shell Haven and Coryton. Both have now closed, the Shell site ceased operating in 1999 and has now been redeveloped by Dubai Ports as a deepwater container port with attendant logistics and commercial development. Coryton refinery ceased to operate in 2013, demolition of the process units continues and the site is now under redevelopment as a Fuels Storage and Distribution Terminal in a joint venture between Greenergy and Shell as well as an enterprise zone. Both these changes point to a bright future for the town. Many residents also travel along the nearby A13 to work in the Lakeside Shopping Centre, as well as the industrial and commercial businesses along the north bank of the Thames running west towards the Port of London. As Stanford-le-Hope grows in size, it has started to incorporate neighbouring settlements such as Corringham, Mucking and Fobbing, the latter of which was the scene of one of the uprisings which led to the Peasants' Revolt.
Stanford-le-Hope is bordered to the north by the A13 road and to the south by the Thames Estuary. It is located 12.7 miles (20.5 km) west of Southend-on-Sea. The town centre has a village feel with its 800-year-old church, St Margarets making a prominent and attractive landmark around which shops, pubs and restaurants have grown to create a lively core to the town.
The River Hope, a tributary of the Thames runs through the town.
Locally there are a number of parks and nature reserves, notably Thurrock Thameside Nature Reserve, with a visitor centre providing views up and down the Thames across both industrial and natural landscapes including the Mucking Flats SSSI. The result of the Thurrock Council 2016 local elections meant that Stanford-le-Hope was represented by six councillors from the Conservative Party, and two UKIP councillors.

The Melita Hotel London
We were in London as part of a large European vacation September 22 23 and 24...
we booked The Melita knowing what to expect and were satisfied with our choice, The Melita is a 10 minute walk to Victoria Station and 15 to The Victoria coach station, in fact our hop on hop off tour stopped at 7pm and we were in Piccadilly Circus at the time, it was a 2.2 km walk back to our hotel and at no time did we feel unsafe....the location was perfect,even better than we thought as we could walk to a lot of the major attractions, ..... I also agree with anyone who has stated this is a small room, in 40 years of travel it is the smallest room we have ever had...BUT it did the job...we did not need more room as we were out all day and when we came in at night it was basically straight to sleep....unfortunately the rooms do not block out noise from neighbours but nothing our iphone app white noise did not take care of, the mattress was comfy ...the bed is small but needed to be to fit in the room....We did though find our third floor room VERY hot even though it was not so bad outside....i think one of the problems is the small fridge is in a cabinet and man open that cabinet and its like a blast furnace....even though the window was wide open there is no air movement, ...thank you trip advisor as I started to read if others had the hot room problem and I read where Al from the hotel told people they were given a fan...it was 9:45 pm and i went straight down to the desk to ask for one and the lady (Joanna I think) immediately found one for us...that was great...a suggestion to management...just leave the fan in the room...we understand AC cannot be installed due to codes but the fan was a life saver...plus please install a small shelf in the bathrooms...The stairs are VERY narrow and steep so ensure you can carry your luggage up before you book...Joanna offered to help my wife up the stairs with her suitcase but we were fine....we had a early tour on day one so we did not get to try the breakfast as it started at 7:30 and we had to be at the Victoria coach station at that time...but the other two days we did have the breakfast and it was fine...two girls served the meal and coffee..very nice people....I suggest if you are looking for a hotel in a great location at a very fair price look into the Melita, I will post a small youtube video on the hotel sometime soon....finally there are many choices of general grocery stores and pubs / restaurants within the immediate area...again very handy
