Hidalgo , officially the Free and Sovereign State of Hidalgo , is one of the 31 states which, with Mexico City, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided in 84 municipalities and its capital city is Pachuca de Soto. In 1869, Benito Juárez created the State of Hidalgo. He appointed as capital of the state the city of Pachuca to which was added the name de Soto in recognition of Manuel Fernando Soto, who is considered the most important driving force in creating the state.     Peña de Bernal is a 433 m tall monolith, one of the tallest in the world. Peña de Bernal is located in San Sebastián Bernal, a small town in the Mexican state of Querétaro. It is one of the most touristic sites near the capital of Queretaro and considered one of the 13 Wonders of Mexico. The porphyrytic monolith was thought to have been formed during the Jurassic period. A recent chemical analysis by researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico has determined that it is considerably younger, likely formed about 8.7 million years ago.Many people perform a pilgrimage to the small chapel located at the highest point accessible through hiking.
