Holywood Town Belfast - Places to Visit in Northern Ireland
Cities and towns, these are the two different places that tourists get attracted to when it comes to visiting a new country for the first time and trying to explore as much of it as possible, or even for the local people who want to get to know more about their own personal country.
Holywood town is part of Northern Ireland, it is located in the metropolitan area of Belfast city in county Down. This town in Northern Ireland is a civil parish and townland of 755 acres, lying on the shore of Belfast Lough, between Belfast and Bangor.
Going back into the history of this old city, one will get to ask about the name which lots of people now pronounce in the same way as Hollywood is pronounced. Back in the old days, the name Holywood was rather Sanctus Boscus, which means Holy Wood, and it was given to this place by the Normans after the woodland surrounding the monastery founded by St. Laseran before 640.
There are different interesting things that might be held in this town, such as the jazz and blues festival which is held there. There are other things that distinguish this town as well, such as the distinctive building known as the Old Priory. Even though this might sometimes be mistaken for the famous Hollywood in the United States of America, it is also considered one of the most visited towns in county Down for the fashion boutiques that it has, the delis and the galleries.
Holywood is also one of Northern Ireland's famous towns and places because it boasts Ireland's only surviving Maypole dating back to 1700 when a Dutch ship ran aground offshore and as a show of gratitude, they erected their broken mast.
We have already mentioned that the jazz and blues festival is held in Holywood, but there is also the annual May Day Celebrations which are considered the main focus when it comes to this town, and this is actually one of the big events in Ards and North Down calendar, when the school children dance around the maypole alongside market stalls and family attractions.
Holywood town stands as one of the beautiful places with a history carried behind which tourists and locals could visit and check what it has to offer - at least we have already mentioned some of the reasons why we believe this is considered a good place to travel to - but there are still other towns that could be visited in county Down as well, such as the Village of Saintfield ( Donaghadee which is 18 miles away from Belfast ( Crawfordsburn ( and Portaferry (
When it comes to the different attractions in county Down, Northern Ireland, there are different things which we should refer to as well in addition to these towns which we have mentioned, such as checking the Whiterocks Beach in Portrush ( Dundrum Castle ( Ballywalter Beach ( Down County Museum ( Tollymore Forest ( and lots of other things to dig deep behind and discover if you got the chance to be in county Down.
Being a place that is not far away from Belfast city, it is also considered a great suggestion for those touring the city to consider making a different kind of plan and add this destination to their list, they will end up visiting another part of Northern Ireland which they might have never thought about visiting before. Being the Capital city of Northern Ireland means that there are lots of different things to be explored in this city and it is of course one of the most visited cities in Northern Ireland as well. Whether it is about the shopping places and centers or else about the museums and old historical places, there are always what you will fall in love with in Belfast, and most importantly, walking around this city is a recommended option.

The Commercial Court in Belfast is one of those places which are usually recommended for visitors for the different restaurants, bars, cafes, and even hotels which it hosts, and not just that, but it is also one of the places where lots of those old buildings and even bars are located - you will definitely enjoy a walk there and exploring all the beautiful things regarding this place ( The Commercial Court is found inside a place known as the Cathedral Quarter which is also one important spot to discover because it is located in Belfast's City Centre and invites lots of people to it (
We have to say that one of the best things about Belfast in Northern Ireland is the fact that most of the touristic attractions are located next to one another and within a walking distance and this allows for enjoying the scenery of walking the streets while going from one place to the other (

One of the interesting things which we should mention about Belfast and walking through its streets is the graffiti or the murals which are found across the streets on the different walls of the buildings - this is one of the most interesting parts of our trip when we are walking the streets of Belfast - we get to see lots and lots of things.

Downpatrick is a medium-sized town about 33 km south of Belfast in County Down, Northern Ireland. It has been an important site since ancient times. Its cathedral is said to be the burial place of Saint Patrick.
As the largest town in the Lecale area, Downpatrick is a commercial, recreational and administrative centre for the locality and serves as a hub for the nearby towns and villages. Within a 30 minutes drive from Belfast, the location serves as a commuter town for a large number of people. The town has a number of primary and post-primary schools educating students from all over the east Down area.
Downpatrick is characterised by the rolling drumlins that are a feature of the Lecale area and a legacy of glaciation during the Pleistocene, the Down drumlins themselves are underlaid by Ordovician and Silurian shales and grits. Its lowest point lies within the marshland surrounding the north east of the town, recorded as being 1.3 ft (0.40 m) below sea level. Downpatrick is approximately 22 miles (35 km) from Belfast and has a regular bus service to the city.
Ballyalton Court Cairn is a single court grave situated on a rock outcrop by the roadside 0.5 miles (0.80 km) from Ballyalton village, which is 2.25 miles (3.62 km) east of Downpatrick, at grid ref 531 448. Ballynoe Stone Circle, a large circle of over 50 closely spaced upright stones, surrounding a mound which, when excavated, was found to contain two cists in which cremated bones were found, is only 2.5 miles (4 km) south in the hamlet of Ballynoe.
Down County Museum, is located on the Mall in English Street in Downpatrick and was formerly the old Down County Gaol. It was built between 1789 and 1796 at the behest of the County Grand Jury of Down under the supervision of Marquess of Downshire, the Earl of Hillsborough and the Hon Edward Ward, it was designed by architect Charles Lilly.
Downpatrick Racecourse, is located on the Ballydugan Road on the outskirts of Downpatrick. Horse racing has been held at Downpatrick under the charter of James II of England.
Downpatrick & County Down Railway is Ireland's only full-sized heritage railway. Built on the BCDR's former line to Belfast, it links the town with Inch Abbey and various other places of historical interest.
Inch Abbey, a large, ruined Cistercian monastic site featuring early Gothic architecture is 0.75 miles (1.2 km) north-west of Downpatrick on the north bank of the River Quoile off the main road to Belfast. The Lecale peninsula covers an area of some 78 square miles (200 km2) between Downpatrick and Dundrum. It is an area of historical and geographic significance.
The Mound of Down or Rathkeltair is one of the major earthworks of Ulster, situated on the NW edge of Downpatrick it is a good example of an Iron Age defensive earthwork in the middle of which a Norman Motte and Bailey was built by John de Courcy after his defeat of Rory Mac Donlevy in 1177.
St. Patrick Center, is the only permanent exhibition in the world dedicated to the patron saint of Ireland, and one of the best tourist destinations in Ireland. Quoile Castle is a ruined 16th-century tower house, just off the main road from Downpatrick to Strangford.
Downpatrick is situated at the junction of the A7 (Downpatrick to Saintfield and Belfast) road, the A25 (Downpatrick to Newry and Dublin) road and the A2 coast road. While there are no rail services in Downpatrick, Ulsterbus provides bus services to and from the Downpatrick Bus Station. Downpatrick railway station on the Belfast and County Down Railway, opened on 23 March 1859 and Downpatrick Loop Platform opened on 24 September 1892.

Ulster Folk Museum - Holywood - Early 20th Century Life
The Ulster Folk Museum or the Cultra Folk Park is an event location for a visit any day of the week. The site is also known as the Belfast Folk Museum or the Folk and transport Museum. Situated just outside of Belfast - in a small town called Cultra and Holywood - it's a 10 minute drive from Belfast City.
Ulster Folk Museum is one part of two different museums which are both situated in the same place and which are the Ulster Folk Museum and the Ulster Transport Museum ( The Folk Museum is for the aim of illustrating the way of life and traditions of the people of Northern Ireland, both in the past and in the present. This is where our trip was this time and where we got introduced to the way people are and were living.
Ulster Folk and Transport Museum ranks as one of the top attractions in Belfast, Northern Ireland - after being there and touring the place, we could now understand the reason behind that; it really tells a lot about the lives of the Irish people.
Ulster Folk Museum has a variety of old buildings and dwellings which were all located in various parts of Ireland and then were taken and rebuilt once again in this museum grounds in order to illustrate the rural way of life in the early 20th century. One of the aims of this museum is to recreate this whole period and the life of it, so it is not just about the buildings but the museum also managed to complete this period with the farms, cottages, crops, and livestock.
Stepping into Ulster Folk Museum is like entering a whole new city but which is more of a historical one, where people are wearing different clothes and are living their lives in a different kind of way. It is interesting to pass by all these buildings and see those real people who are wearing costumes of the old times and pretending to live back that life while you are still wearing the same clothes and doing the same things.
Walking in the world of this museum will give you the chance to see some of the things and activities that the old people were used to do and which include open hearth cooking, printing, needlework, and traditional Irish crafts demonstrations. Coming to understand how these things are done might not be an easy thing unless you start watching them in real and that is exactly what is offered to you in Ulster Folk Museum.
Knowing more about the life of the Irish people back in the early 20th century is interesting and what doubles this interest is the things which one will get to see while being there and which are related to the unusual relics from Ulster's past, such as the unusual waffle iron from the mid 19th-century, the old 'poteen' distillery from Portmore and the first win axle bicycle ever seen in Ireland.
The feeling of being in a whole new city but traveling back in time is one of the different reasons why lots of people love to visit Ulster Folk Museum, but in addition to these buildings and watching how people used to do some activities, there are also those galleries and exhibitions which are found there, these exhibitions are usually temporary and from those which were held there, there is They Love Music Mightily an exhibition featuring contemporary recordings of Irish traditional music, and Meet the Victorians which was focusing on the aspects of the Victorian life.
Ulster Folk Museum is the holder of Northern Ireland's main film, photographic, television and sound archives, and it also has a large library that contains over 15,000 books and periodicals; these are open to the public but only during the office hours, so you could get the chance to visit them and check what they have to offer back to you from history.
It is really interesting to walk in a museum where you are passing by those wearing costumes from the old times that give you the feeling that you have traveled back to that time - the people, the transportation cars inside, the crafts and the activities are all done as if these people are still living from that old age.

Historic Holywood Library Co Down
I'm just a few miles from home over in Holywood Co Down. I'm on High Street which runs through the centre of town.
This is the historic and quirky building that now houses Hollywood library.

At the Maypole turn left along High Street passing the fine building of the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church on your right. The building from 1849, also by Charles Lanyon, with its fine Doric columns is built in the style of Andrea Palladio (Palladianism) who was arguably the most influential architect of the Italian Renaissance. Almost directly opposite is High Street
Presbyterian Church (1858). Approximately 50m past the
Presbyterian Church is Holywood Library.
Holywood Library
Holywood Library, a listed building, was founded as primary and secondary schools in the 1860’s. Formerly known as the Sullivan Schools, it was where the renowned 20th century naturalist and
historian Robert Lloyd Praeger and his sister Sophia Rosamond Praeger began their education. Outside the library you can see three sculptures entitled the “Pillars of Holywood” by Tim Shutter, who has worked with Anthony Gormley on a commission for the British Library. The sculptures, which were commissioned
by Holywood Arts Trust and received funding through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Lottery through the Public ArtProgramme, depict the legacy of the town’s 1,400-year history from the 7th century church, to the invasion of
the Anglo-Normans in the 12th century and the domicile of the wealthy Belfast industrialists of the 19th century.
The Praeger Family
Egmont Apjohn Praeger was born on 14 May 1872 in Holywood son of Willem Emilius Praeger and Maria Praeger (nee Patterson) married on 13 November 1862 in First Presbyterian Ch, Rosemary St, Belfast.
Willem Emilius Praeger was born on 1 February 1835 in The Hague, Holland where his parents operated a linen business. Willem moved to Ireland and worked for the firm of Preston, Smyth & Co (linen manufacturers and merchants) in Belfast.
Willem and Maria Praeger lived in The Cres, Holywood. In 1868 the Praeger family moved to Woodburn House, Croft Road in the townland of Ballymenoch, Holywood. ( Ulster History Circle plaque commemorating Rosamund Praeger, Sculptor, (1867 – 1954) and Lloyd Praeger, Naturalist & Historian, (1865 – 1953). )
Next door lived Maria Praeger’s brother Sir Robert Lloyd Patterson JP.
Willem and Maria Praeger had six children:
William Emilius (born in 1863 and became Professor of Biology at Kalamazoo College in Michigan USA)
Robert Lloyd (born in 1865 and became a naturalist and historian)
Sophia Rosamond (born 15 April 1867 and became a sculptor.
Hendrich John (Harry, born 22 January 1869 and moved to the USA)
Egmont Apjohn (born 14 May 1872)
Owen Maurice (born 26 May 1874 and became a doctor; died in 1905 aged 31)
When Willem Praeger died on 25 April 1881 (aged 46) the Praeger family moved to the townland of Ballycultra.
Maria Praeger died on 8 June 1930 (aged 90).
Egmont Apjohn Praeger attended Mr McAlester’s School at Woodburn, Holywood from 1885 to 1886 (Charles McAlester was the local Unitarian Minister).
During the Great War Egmont Praeger served in the Royal Navy.
He died of a heart attack in London in 1919.
