The Hooghly River or the Bhāgirathi-Hooghly, traditionally called 'Ganga', is an approximately 260-kilometre-long distributary of the Ganges River in West Bengal, India. The Ganges splits into the Padma and the Hooghly near Giria, Murshidabad. The Padma flows eastward into Bangladesh, whereas the Hooghly flows south through West Bengal. The river flows through the Rarh region, the lower deltaic districts of West Bengal, and eventually into the Bay of Bengal.   • 1. The Strand Chandannagar
    The following list is based on locations listed in Phipps . The locations are listed in order as one goes down the Hooghly River towards the river's mouth. The name in the first column of the table is the name one encounters most frequently in British East India Company sources. East and West in the table refer to the banks of the river. After the construction of the Strand Road, in the 1820s, shipbuilding was concentrated at Sulkea, Howrah, and Kidderpore. The greatest shipbuilding years on the Hooghly up to 1839 were 1813 , 1801 , and 1816 .
