Kasaragod is a municipal town and the district headquarters of Kasaragod district of Kerala state in India. Situated in the rich biodiversity of Western Ghats, it is known for the Chandragiri and Bekal Forts, Chandragiri River, historic Kolathiri Rajas, natural environment of Ranipuram and Kottancheri Hills, historical and religious sites like the Madhur Temple and Ananthapura Lake Temple, and Malik Deenar Mosque. It is located 585 km north of state capital Thiruvananthapuram and 50 km south of the port city of Mangalore.

    Bekal Fort was built by Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi in 1650 AD, at Bekal. It is the largest fort in Kerala, spreading over 40 acres .

  • 2. Hosdurg Fort Kasaragod
    Hosdurg is one of the four taluks that constitute the Kasaragod District, state of Kerala; the others are Kasaragod Taluk, Manjeshwaram taluk and Vellarikundu taluk. It shares its borders on the north with the Kasaragod taluk, south with the Kannur District, east with the Dakshina Kannada and coorg district of Karnataka and on the west with the Arabian sea. With an area of 900.3 km2 , it is the smaller of the two taluks. Kanhangad and Nileshwaram are the municipalities within the taluk. Hosdurg , a kilometer south of Kanhangad town, the latter the taluk headquarters. Other major settlements include Trikarpur, Cheruvathur and Chittarikkal. Bekal Fort tourism is situated in the taluk. Etymology of Hosdurg is derived from Kannada with the meaning of new and fort .

    Kanipura Sri Gopalakrishna Temple at Kumble is an ancient temple and is situated eight miles due north of Kasaragod town. According to local religious beliefs, the Krishnashila Idol of the Lord Bala Gopalkrishna, having the features of a child, which was worshipped by Lord Krishna’s foster mother Yashoda, is believed to have been presented by the almighty Lord Krishna himself to the sage Kanva Maharshi in Dwaparayuga, who in turn installed the same at its present location where the temple exists. Historical records state that in the 10th Century, the Temple was renovated by King Jayasimha of Kadamba Danasty, whose capital was Kumbla and even the administration of his Kingdom was being done in the name of Kanipura Sri Gopalkrishna.
