Kathua , is a city and a Municipal Council in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, near its southern border with Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.Kathua is also called 'the city of Sufis' or ' Dawlat Auliya' owing to the presence of large number of Sufi Shrines of Pirs. The city is also the gateway to the state and a big industrial town with army presence .Kathua along with its satellite township of Lakhanpur in J&K and the nearby city of Pathankot in Punjab constitute the Kathua-Pathankot twin city urban area. Kathua is the second largest city in Jammu division after Jammu city.

    The Chamera Dam impounds the River Ravi and supports the hydroelectricity project in the region. It is located near the town of Dalhousie, in the Chamba district in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India The reservoir of the dam is the Chamera Lake. Large part of its reservoir lies in Salooni sub-division of Chamba. After completion of the first phase, the Chamera-I generates 540 MW of electricity. The second stage i.e. Chamera-II Dam generates 300 MW of electricity. From year 2012, the 3rd stage i.e. Chamera III generates 231 MW of electricity. The unique feature of the region is the fluctuating day and night temperature.     The Ranjit Sagar Dam, also known as the Thein Dam, is part of a hydroelectric project constructed by the Government of Punjab PSPCL on the Ravi River on the Border of two states of India Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. 60% of the lake is part of J&K. The project is situated near Pathankot city in Pathankot district of the state of Punjab and Kathua city and Basholi tehsil of Kathua district in J&K. The project is the largest hydroelectric dam of the state of Punjab. The township where the site is located is called Shah pur Kandi Township. Feasibility studies for the project began in 1953 and geotechnical studies continued until 1980.
