Kerkennah Islands are a group of islands lying off the east coast of Tunisia in the Gulf of Gabès, at 34°42′N 11°11′E. The Islands are low-lying, being no more than 13 metres above sea level. The main islands are Chergui and Gharbi. The archipelago has an area of 160 square kilometres and a population of 15,501 .Kerkennah's main town, Remla , has a population of 2,000. The population of the islands significantly decreased during the 1980s due to drought. The islands were unable to provide suitable irrigation systems and, with clean water rapidly running out, many islanders were forced to leave for mainland Tunisia, the nearest town being Sfax.

    La Goulette is the port of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. The Kasbah fortress was built in 1535 by Charles I of Spain but was captured by the Ottoman Turks in 1574. La Goulette is located at around 36°49′5″N 10°18′18″E. The name derives from the gullet, a channel where the city is located, not from the ship type schooner, called goélette, gulet, goleta or goletta in French, Turkish, Spanish and Italian. La Goulette is linked to Tunis by the TGM railway.
