Kolar district pronunciation ) is a district in the state of Karnataka, India. Kolar is the district headquarters. Located in southern Karnataka, it is the state's easternmost district. The district is surrounded by the Bangalore Rural district on the west, Chikballapur district on the north, the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on the east and the Krishnagiri and Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu on the south. On 10 September 2007, it was bifurcated to form the new district of Chikballapur. Due to the discovery of the Kolar Gold Fields, the district has become known as the Golden Land of India.

    Budikote or the Fort of Ash is a small village situated in Bangarpet Taluk of Kolar District in Karnataka state of India. It is about 15 mi from Kolar Gold Fields the nearest city. It has an old fort, hence the name. It is also the birthplace of Hyder Ali, father of Tipu Sultan. This village has a population of roughly 3000 people in 600 families. The main occupation in this village is agriculture, though farmers mostly suffer from irregular monsoons. Sericulture and Pisciculture are practiced to some extent. Budikote also is well known for housing Namma Dhwani, India's first cable community radio station, operating from 2002.
