Japan (Japanese: 日本 Nippon [ɲip̚poɴ] or Nihon [ɲihoɴ]; formally 日本国 About this sound Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, meaning State of Japan) is a sovereign island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies off the eastern coast of the Asian mainland, and stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the southwest.
The kanji that make up Japan's name mean sun origin. 日 can be read as ni and means sun, while 本 can be read as hon, or pon and means origin. Japan is often referred to by the famous epithet Land of the Rising Sun in reference to its Japanese name.
Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago consisting of about 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area and often are referred to as home islands. The country is divided into 47 prefectures in eight regions; Hokkaido being the northernmost prefecture and Okinawa being the southernmost one. The population of 127 million is the world's eleventh largest. Japanese people make up 98.5% of Japan's total population. Approximately 9.1 million people live in the city of Tokyo,[16] the capital of Japan.
Archaeological research indicates that Japan was inhabited as early as the Upper Paleolithic period. The first written mention of Japan is in Chinese history texts from the 1st century AD. Influence from other regions, mainly China, followed by periods of isolation, particularly from Western Europe, has characterized Japan's history. From the 12th century until 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns who ruled in the name of the Emperor.
Japan entered into a long period of isolation in the early 17th century, which was ended in 1853 when a United States fleet pressured Japan to open to the West. After nearly two decades of internal conflict and insurrection, the Imperial Court regained its political power in 1868 through the help of several clans from Chōshū and Satsuma, and the Empire of Japan was established. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, victories in the First Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War and World War I allowed Japan to expand its empire during a period of increasing militarism.
The Second Sino-Japanese War of 1937 expanded into part of World War II in 1941, which came to an end in 1945 following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Japanese surrender. Since adopting its revised constitution on May 3, 1947 during the occupation by the SCAP, Japan has maintained a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy with an Emperor and an elected legislature called the National Diet.
Japan is a member of the UN, the OECD, the G7, the G8, and the G20 and is considered a great power.[17][18][19] The country has the world's third-largest economy by nominal GDP and the world's fourth-largest economy by purchasing power parity. It is also the world's fourth-largest exporter and fourth-largest importer. The country benefits from a highly skilled workforce and is among the most highly educated countries in the world, with one of the highest percentages of its citizens holding a tertiary education degree.[20]
Although Japan has officially renounced its right to declare war, it maintains a modern military with the world's eighth-largest military budget,[21] used for self-defense and peacekeeping roles. Japan is a developed country with a very high standard of living and Human Development Index. Its population enjoys the highest life expectancy and the third lowest infant mortality rate in the world.[22][23]

Area Characteristics
Saitama is an inland prefecture with more than 7 million people. With an area of 3,797km2（1,466mile2）, it is bigger than the 179th-biggest nation of Samoa（2,842km2＝1,097mile2）. Access to the southern part of the prefecture which includes Omiya and Urawa is excellent as a bedroom community of Tokyo while the northern area which includes the city of Chichibu has plenty of nature.
Major Sites
Saitama Prefecture has Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park among many other sightseeing sites to enjoy nature including the downstream area of Nagatoro Gorge. Along with the landmarks of Saitama New Urban Center and Saitama Super Arena, there is a great variety of spots to see such as The Railway Museum, Bonsai Village and Kawagoe which has been dubbed “Little Edo”.
Food
Soka senbei (rice crackers), Kawagoe potato cakes and Kumagaya gokabo sweets are the 3 famous confections of Saitama. Furthermore, the prefecture is also famous as a treasure house for its comfort food including Kitamoto tomato curry which won a national curry contest, Hatogaya yakiudon (fried udon noodles) which has been recognized as one of the Top 5 yakiudon in Japan, and a form of karaage (deep-fried chicken) whose breading is made from Soka senbei. As well, there is Sayama tea which is among the Top 3 teas in the country and Coedo beer from Kawagoe which has even won acclaim abroad.
Transportation
There are 15 railways operated by JR and private corporations going from Tokyo into Saitama, so these are recommended over buses and cars. It’s customary to take the train from Tokyo Station for Omiya via Ueno or go through Ikebukuro to reach Kawagoe and Chichibu. Although Saitama has plenty of north-south lines, it has a dearth of east-west lines so if you are considering touring through the prefectural sightseeing spots, renting a car is convenient.

Traditional Japanese Shopping Street Tour
The first thing we did was go to a sembei shop (rice cracker) and see how they were made. We tested the freshly made crackers and they were absolutely delicious. We were even given a few to take home as souvenirs. On our way to the next place we stopped by a kura, which roughly translates into a kind of old style fireproof warehouse. These used to be common back in the day when fires happened pretty frequently. They not only stored important items but could also hold people in case of emergency. From there we went to a traditional Japanese sweets shop where we learned a bit about how they were made and sat down for some great green tea to match the sweets we were given. Next, we were off to a shoe shop that specializes in traditional footwear. We learned everything about footwear from what you would wear at a summer festival to the most expensive shoes that are made to match kimonos. It was a great history lesson and hard to believe how many shoes you would need in traditional Japan. After that we made a quick stop at an area with old style coffee shops housed in original style buildings. One seemed to be even inside a kura. From there we went to a tofu house where handmade tofu is made daily. I must say that I had no idea how good tofu could taste. I shouldn’t be surprised but wow I was. It was incredible. It tasted nothing like any tofu I’d eaten before. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see it being prepared because they do that at about 5AM in the morning but they did explain the process to us in great detail. From there we were taken to an original style kids candy and snack shop. We were greeted by a friendly lady who has been running the shop for years and years. In that place you can buy all sorts of candy at super cheap prices so any kid can afford to go there after school. She also showed us some of her artwork which, although looking like paintings, is actually made of thread. It's very impressive. Our next stop was at a 200 year old doll house. Wow! Talk about pricey. But these dolls have such extreme attention to detail, it takes them weeks or months to complete. Even their kimonos must come in from a specialist. They showed us some of the miniature kimonos used to make a full doll and the traditions behind them. Finally, it wouldn’t be complete without a stop for some yakitori (chicken skewers) to round our day off. Oh, that was delicious. Fresh yakitori was just what I needed after a day of seeing the sites. What a great time. Thanks!

Japan adventure in September 2014. I went to my hometown in Koshigaya in Saitama. I also explored Tokyo. And I rode the shinkansen to Osaka for the first time, and went to Kyoto as well. It was all fun!!!
