Kyaikkhami is a resort town in the Mon State of south-east Myanmar. During the time of the Ayutthaya Kingdom , the town was probably a vassal state of Ayutthaya and it was known in Thai as Chiang Kran or Chiang Tran . It was renamed Amherst after William Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst, then governor-general of India who successfully seized the town during the First Anglo-Burmese War .The town is situated on a peninsula about 48 km south of the town of Mawlamyine.     The Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, the Siam–Burma Railway, the Thai–Burma Railway and similar names, was a 415-kilometre railway between Ban Pong, Thailand, and Thanbyuzayat, Burma, built by the Empire of Japan in 1943 to support its forces in the Burma campaign of World War II. This railway completed the rail link between Bangkok, Thailand, and Rangoon, Burma . The name used by the Japanese Government is Thai–Men-Rensetsu-Tetsudou , which means Thailand-Myanmar-Link-Railway.
