At 2000 feet in Central Greece we visit the timeless village of Makrinitsa known locally as the ‘balcony of Mount Pelion’. Pelion is the Healing Mountain, a reputation gained for the hundreds of herbs that are found in the area along with the variety of chestnut, olive and walnut trees that cloak its steep slopes. We travel around the mountain and down to the pebbled beaches at its base. En route we meet a local photographer, learn about Pelion’s strong connections with Greek mythology, and discover the laid-back and traditional lifestyle for which the country is famous. Zagora ( Pelion - Ζαγορά Πηλίου ) is the biggest village of the Mountain, located 47 km from Volos. Built up a the mountainside, it offers an unobstructed view of the Aegean sea and the surrounding area. Most of the houses are traditionally built with stone. It is worth visiting the Library where there are almost 18.000 books, among them some rare manuscripts and The School of Riga, founded in 18th century. Visitors can sample traditional food in the taverns scattered around the village. Every year, in early September, the local Women's Cooperative organizes the apple festival, for the famous Zagora apples considered the best of the kind. The ski resort is 20 km away for winter visitors. The nearest long sandy and well organized beach is Horefto which is 2,5 km away.
