The British Railway Variety Pack 2017 ~ Part 4
Probably my last upload for this year. I haven't gone out much due to a lack of interest in trains in recent times therefore this video spans from September until yesterday. Its snowing outside currently in a way I haven't seen for years. To get more excited about trains I've bought a new camera which I wanted to try out at Old Linslade but I remembered I took the memory card out the day before and forgot to put it back, with no internal memory I was carrying a dead weight around. I now respect how difficult it is to juggle a still camera with a video camera. My time at Sandy was very difficult as the sun was in the wrong place, the wind was blowing over my tripod and my hands were so cold it was hard to control the twiddly bits on the camera. Very much waiting for the MML electrification works and 4th track re-instatement at Sharnbrook to Corby. These are things that are progressing but slowly. Its also an expensive hobby if you want to travel far and wide, I'm not embarrassed to say Christmas has robbed me blind already. Trains are my cheap hobby, believe me when I say I have much more expensive tastes. I usually go to see trains when I'm broke, but now i'm broke broke.
For the record I spent a day at Irchester with Hayden (Homemovieperson) whilst making this video. Strangely he doesn't seem to have uploaded his vlogs of that day yet.
I have some great locations planned out for 2018 on the UK network and I'll also be visiting Japan and will cover the trains a bit whilst I am there. Merry Xmas everyone.

45596 Thunders past Helwith Bridge hauling the Bahamas Tour II 16-02-2019
I had planned to go and get some shots of the 1st tour to be hauled by 45596 1 week earlier however a combination of illness and poor weather conditions forced me to put this back by 1 week. It was certainly worth the wait though as this week, the sun was out and the winds were comparatively light.
As it was coming up the Aire Valley from Keighley, there was only 1 place to start really; Gargrave. Rather than go on the platform as I have done for the last 2 years I headed down the public footpath that runs through a field next to the line a few hundred yards from the station. Being February, foliage wasn't really an issue which enabled me to use a slightly better angle than when I was last here in the fog 3 1/2 years ago. Running pretty much on time, 45596 came thundering past the camera, running fairly easily at the foot of the climb up to Bell Busk. 37516 was on the rear and sounded like it was taking it's own weight but nothing more.
The 40 minute water stop at Hellifield gave us plenty of time to overtake and head to our favourite S&C haunt; Helwith Bridge. While there were many onlookers everyone managed to keep out of everyone else's shot until about 10 minutes before when a photographer walked up and stopped right in the middle of where I would be panning (and where he would end up in most other people's shots too). He refused to move but fortunately I was able to keep him out the shot by having the loco at the bottom of the picture while panning round. Once again, it was worth the wait as 45596 came roaring along the level section, again with 37516 taking its own weight.
Three Steam Tours in on one day featuring 60009, 45690 and 45699 on 11 August 2018
I visited three places on Saturday 11 August to film no less than three steam hauled railtours in three different locations. These tours took place 50 years to the day when BR ran specials as a commemoration of the ending of steam power on UK railways by running the famous 15 Guinea Special aka 1T57, it's reporting code for the day.
This event was intended to see the complete elimination of steam locomotives for good. However, BR reckoned without the efforts of Steam enthusiasts everywhere and the general love the British people had, and still have, for the steam engine, and pioneers of steam preservation such as The Ffestiniog, Talyllyn, The Bluebell and Worth Valley Railways. So today we see many (now called) Heritage Railway Lines flourishing, and many railtour operators many steam servicing and maintenance companies and a whole range of steam engine expertise even producing new locomotives!
So much for the so called end of steam.
The day started at Lancaster where 60009, 86.259 were to seen along with a couple of class 68 and class 66 diesel locos.
It was on to Oxenholme to see Galatea roaring through on the Cumbrian Mountain Express (1Z86).
Then it was on to Carlisle for some more steam! There Galatea was seen on the return CME and then incredibly, a third steam special arrived from York behind 45690 Leander and duly departed. All specials had class 47 diesels tucked in behind the steam locos as a precaution against lineside fires springing up.
As a personal aside, I have to say that the atmosphere following this Saturday's runs was in complete contrast to the 1968 events when a young 21 year old climbed signal gantries to get better pics and no one said a word. Can't imagine what would happen today!
I left very depressed in 1968 but in contrast, today, there was a genuine feeling of elation and hope for a bright future in the hands of folks who really care for steam engines.
I had the good company of steam buddies, Allan McKever, Ian Bradshaw, Stu Harrison and Richard Harnetty and a great day was had by all!
A big thanks to all the railway touring groups, their staff and Locomotive owners, West Coast Rail and their drivers, the station staff and even Network Rail for making this such a superb day.

Seven days since I last posted a Youtube video so here is a video compilation of footage I took of 'The Fellsman' rail tour during the summer of 2015. Locations include Preston, Settle, Ribblehead, Lazonby, Armathwaite and Carlisle. The Preston footage has not previously been published.
I will be out again with the Camcorder during the coming week with more up to date footage of steam and diesel action. Allan.

East Lancashire Railway Autumn Steam Event 2011
Action from both days of the East Lancashire Railway Autumn Steam Event which was held on the 21st and 22nd October 2011. The visiting engine was Super D No 49395. Locations included are Bury Bolton Street, Ramsbottom, Heywood, Summerseat and Brooksbottom viaduct.
