Toliara is a city in Madagascar.
It is the capital of the Atsimo-Andrefana region, located 936 km south-west 'of Antananarivo.
The current spelling(s) of the name was adopted in the 1970s, and reflects the orthography of the Malagasy language. Many geographic place names were similarly altered in this time from their previous French spellings following Malagasy independence in 1960.
The city has a population of 148,500. As a port town it acts as a major import/export hub for commodities such as sisal, soap, hemp, cotton, rice, and peanuts.

Le hira gasy, opéra des champs - Madagascar
Le hira gasy, littéralement « chant malgache », est celui des Merina de la région d’Antananarivo et des Hauts Plateaux de Madagascar. Son origine remonterait au XVIIIe siècle, lorsque le souverain Andrianampoinimerina entreprit d’étendre les rizières et invita des artistes à venir encourager les bâtisseurs de digues. C’est alors que danseurs, musiciens, acrobates et maîtres de l’art oratoire accoururent sur les chantiers. De ces rencontres, un nouvel art vit le jour : le hira gasy.
Genre synthétique à part entière, empruntant aux Européens galons, épaulettes, tambours, violons et trompettes, cet opéra rural est un exemple édifiant du métissage culturel de Madagascar. Encore pratiqué aujourd’hui, cet art populaire, écrit et conçu par les moins lettrés, demeure par ailleurs l’un des vecteurs de démocratie et de culture sur la Grande Île.
