Tourism in Russia has seen rapid growth since the late Soviet times, first domestic tourism and then international tourism, fuelled by the rich cultural heritage and great natural variety of the country. Major tourist routes in Russia include a journey around the Golden Ring of ancient cities, cruises on the big rivers like the Volga, and long journeys on the famous Trans-Siberian Railway.

Moscow Sergiyev Posad

Sergiyev Posad is one of the seven Russian-Orthodox monasteries all around Moscow called Golden Ring. The monastery, founded in 1340 was later destroyed by the Tartars and fortified 1550 by walls and watchtowers. After it's founder Sergejev was declared a Saint in 1422 the monastery become one of the holy centers of the Russian-Orthodox church. The Soviets closed it in 1919 and used the buildings for housing and commercial purposes. In the 1940 it was declared a National Museum Reservation which protected it against further dilapidation. When I visited in 1998 all buildings were properly renovated and the church was reinstated in their previous rights.

Golden Domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Yalta

Steve and I saw the golden domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral shining from the ship as we cruised into Yalta, each time the Viking tour bus crept through the streets, and finally walked over to admire. The Cathedral was gorgeous inside but views of the typical and bright gold Russian Onion Domes were a knockout.

Briefly, who was Alexander Nevsky? Important since you'll see a cathedral named after him anywhere a Russian Orthodox cathedral can be seen. Alexander Nevsky played an important military role in Russia and his victories made him celebrated. In 1252, Nevsky was made Grand Prince of Vladimir (the supreme ruler of Russia) and the Russian Orthodox Church conferred sainthood upon his death.
