Markinch is east of Fife's administrative centre, Glenrothes and preceded Cupar as Fife's place of warranty and justice prior to the 13th century.

Glenrothes is a town situated in the heart of Fife, in east-central Scotland. It is about 30 miles north of Edinburgh and 30 miles south of Dundee. The town had a population of 39,277 in the 2011 census, making it the third largest settlement in Fife and the 18th most populous settlement in Scotland. The name Glenrothes comes from its historical link with the Earl of Rothes, who owned much of the land on which the new town has been built; Glen was added to the name to avoid confusion with Rothes in Moray and in recognition that the town lies in a river valley. Old Photographs Kelty Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Kelty, Scottish Gaelic: Cailtidh, a former coal mining village in the heart of the old mining heartlands of Fife. It is situated on the Fife and Perthshire boundary. The Fife Coal Company was established in 1872, by which time three deep mines had already been sunk in the area. The Lindsay Mine was sunk close to the railway station and about half a mile east of the village in 1873. It employed an average of 820 men and continued in production until 1965, finally being abandoned two years later. Many more pits were to follow, the Aitken pit was sunk in 1899 and continued to employ an average of 1300 men until mining ceased in 1963, while the Lumphinnan pits employed an average of 600 men from 1896 to 1966. The village of Kelty lies immediately to the east of the M90 motorway just before, if you are heading north, it passes from Fife into Perth & Kinross. To its east is Loch Ore and, beyond, the villages of Ballingry and Lochore, while a little over a mile and a half to the south east is Cowdenbeath.

2) Stanier Black5 45407 opens up as she passes through Arbroath station working 1Z65 Edinburgh - Aberdeen.
3) 60009 coasts past the signal box on the Aberdeen - Edinburgh leg, things quickly return to the drab normality as 170452 departs north with 1A73.

Abbotshall Parish Churchyard Kirkcaldy Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland video of the Abbotshall Parish Church and churchyard on ancestry visit to Kirkcaldy, Fife. The first church is said to have been built in 1679, although there is a reused date stone from 1674 on the present church. There is no record of the appearance of the church before it was rebuilt in 1788, and the rebuild is the church which stands today. In 1876 the parish was absorbed into the Burgh of Kirkcaldy. There is a graveyard containing some good examples of historic gravestones.
