MARSASCALA MALTA, Located south of Malta is a beautiful fishing village with a huge touristic promenade and wonderful path walks leading to Marsaxlokk and number of secret sandy blue bays. Malta is the perfect country for those who seek adventure and obviously love the sea!! :)

Marsaxlokk is a traditional fishing village located in the south-eastern part of Malta. The village’s name comes from marsa, which means port and xlokk, which is the local name for south east. The word is related to the name for the dry sirocco wind that blows from the Sahara, comparable to the equivalent Catalan word, xaloc. The village is known for the Marsaxlokk Market, a large market which takes place around the whole village on Sundays and tourist market all days during the week. The inhabitants of the village are called the Xlukkajri and are historically fishermen.
Marsaxlokk is about 40 minutes from Valletta by public bus No. 81 or No. 85. The village is approached via a long, narrow, straight, road with vineyards on both sides, or along the coast from Birzebbuga if traveling on the No. 85. The bay is at the south-east end of the island and is memorable for the many colourful, traditional fishing boats called luzzu . The painted eyes on these luzzus are believed to protect the boats from danger. Tourists visit the town for the picturesque photo opportunities of the bay filled with colourful fishing boats, plethora of seafood restaurants and the very busy Sunday market that sells everything from fish, fruit and vegetables, delicatessen goods and groceries, to souvenirs, clothing and footwear. Another attraction is the nearby, spectacular, Saint Peters Pool. This is a swimming area with crystal clear, deep blue water behind the Delamara Power Station. It is not advisable to visit when the wind is from the South or East however, as the water can become cloudy and sometimes, rough.

Marsascala is an ancient fishing village in Malta, with a picturesque bay, located in the southeast corner of the island. it used to form part of Zabbar in the 19 century. The town has grown up around the sheltered bay, Marsascala Creek, and is protected by the headland of Ras il-Gżira to the south and by Ras iż-Żonqor, to the north. The town today stretches on both sides of the bay and Marsascala’s bay has a promenade continuing all the way to St Thomas Bay with views of low shelving rocks, colourful fishing boats and saltpans. In summer, the village is buzzing with life and many Maltese families have summer homes in this lovely, picturesque bay - the population rises to 20,000 in summer. Marsaskala has a range of modern leisure facilities, bars and restaurants.

EDEN DESTINATIONS IN MALTA & GOZO
There are six EDEN award-winning destinations in the Maltese Islands: Senglea, Mellieha and the Hamlet of Manikata, Gharb, Nadur, Kercem - the Hamlet of Santa Lucija and Xaghra.
The EDEN initiative is an initiative promoting sustainable tourism development models across the EU. It is based on national competitions that take place every other year and result in the selection of a tourist ‘destination of excellence ‘ for each participating country. Through the selection of destinations, EDEN effectively achieves the objective of drawing attention to the values, diversity and common features of European tourist destinations.
This promotional video produced by MTA was launched at a special conference held on 27 October 2016 at Mellieha Holiday Centre. An itinerary of the six destinations was also launched during the Conference. The event and the itinerary are co-funded by the European Commission and the Ministry for Tourism.

The Jerma Palace Hotel is a former four-star hotel in Marsaskala, Malta. It was opened in 1982, and was managed by Corinthia Hotels International. It was the largest hotel in southern Malta until it closed down in 2007. The building was subsequently abandoned, and it has since fallen into a state of disrepair. Plans to demolish the former hotel began in 2016. (As of today, 24th June 2017, nothing is happening on site.)
The Jerma Palace Hotel was built on a headland called il-Hamriga, close to the 17th-century Saint Thomas Tower. The land originally belonged to Franciscan Conventuals and Ivan Burridge, who sold it to San Tumas Holdings. In 1976, San Tumas sold the plot to the Libyan Foreign Investment Company. The Jerma Palace Hotel was subsequently built, and it was opened in 1982. The hotel was managed by Corinthia Hotels International through a management agreement.[1] Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi had a presidential suite within the hotel.[2]

The Jerma Palace was the largest hotel in the south of Malta,[3] and its opening contributed to transforming Marsaskala from a traditional fishing village to a small resort.[4]
The hotel closed down in March 2007,[3] and in July 2008 it was sold to the contractors Jeffrey and Peter Montebello (Jefpet Limited) for €18.6 million. In 2009, the Tumas and Gasan groups sought to transform the hotel into a Portomaso of the south but nothing materialized. The Montebello brothers planned to transform the former hotel into apartments, a 5-star hotel and a yacht marina.[1]

The former hotel is now in a derelict state, with parts of it having collapsed and others being in danger of collapsing. Its interior has been stripped of everything of value, with carpets, marble floors, doors, tiles and even bricks being stolen. The walls are covered in graffiti.[3] The building is occupied by squatters, and it is popular with drug addicts.[5] The former hotel also became an illegal dumping ground, with people disposing of their garbage there.[6] Rubbish left at the hotel caused a number of fires within the building.[7]
In December 2015, it was claimed that people smugglers were using the Jerma Palace Hotel as a drop off point for Syrian refugees to illegally enter Malta.[8]
Following a request by the Marsaskala Local Council[9] and the issue of an enforcement notice,[10] on 20 August 2016 the Planning Authority ordered the hotel's owners to demolish the building.[6] On that same day, the building caught fire but it was put out by the Civil Protection Department.[7]
The site of the hotel, which has been valued at €20.8 million, is to be sold at a judicial auction in October 2016. The demolition of the dilapidated hotel buildings is to cost around €1.5 million.[11]
