Pyatigorsk (Russian: Пятиго́рск) is a city in Stavropol Krai located on the Podkumok River, about 20 kilometers (12 mi) from the town of Mineralnye Vody where there is an international airport and about 45 kilometers (28 mi) from Kislovodsk. Since January 19, 2010, it has been the administrative center of the North Caucasian Federal District of Russia.

Gumachi Peak at 3805m is in Russia's Caucasus mountains near Mineralnye Vody, a spa town in the Baksan Valley near Mount Elbrus.
This was done in 2004 as an acclimatisation peak for ascending Elbrus. Gumachi lies in the main Caucasus range and is climbed via the west ridge on the Jankuat Glacier.

К концу XVIII века Кисловодская долина не была заселена. Имеются сведения о том, что официально территория, где находится источник нарзана, никому не принадлежала и составляла пограничную территорию между землями Большой Кабарды на востоке и землями Мало-Абазинского племени на западе. Известно лишь о существовании в долине небольшого абазинского поселения рода Джантемировых и дозорного поста на Крестовой горе (гора Святого духа), состоящего из двух мазанок, землянки, навеса для лошадей и сторожевой вышки. В 1793 году Кисловодскую долину посетил учёный Пётр-Симон Паллас. Он впервые подробно исследовал источник нарзана, измерил глубину резервуара источника, составил его описание, предсказав нарзану большое будущее, а также составил план прилегающей к источнику местности. Первооткрывателем курортных сезонов в Кисловодске считается командующий войсками на Кавказской линии граф И. И. Морков. В 1798 году он расположился лагерем над источником на Крестовой горе в сопровождении жены и молодого секретаря Алексея Реброва. Морков принимал ванны из подогретого нарзана чтобы вылечиться от астмы.

In 1803 Tsar Alexander I of Russia ordered the construction of the military station which became Kislovodsk. The site took its name from the many mineral springs around the city. The settlement gained town status in 1903. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kislovodsk as a fashionable spa attracted many musicians, artists, and members of the Russian aristocracy. Several of the events in Mikhail Lermontov's 1840 novel A Hero of Our Time take place in Kislovodsk.
