Modderfontein is a suburb of the City of Johannesburg on the east of the Witwatersrand conurbation which lies within the province of Gauteng province of South Africa, formerly called the PWV area. It began as a mining town adjacent to the Modder River, hence its name which is Afrikaans for Modder spring or fountain.
