Follow us on our road trip safari through southern Africa's wildlife paradise Botswana. We drove through most of Botswana, including all the wildlife-rich areas like the Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe Nationalpark including the Chobe Riverfront and the Kalahari. We explored the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the center of the country, the Gcwihaba Caverns in the West and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the south. We also shortly ventured into Simbabwe to marvel upon the majestic Victoria Falls. We were lucky enough to spot most of the big, and many small, animals which call Botswana home. These include elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, kudus, oryx, ostriches, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes, serval cats, warthogs, springboks, impalas and many more.

The Okavango Delta is one of the world's great inland waterways. The meandering Okavango River is breathtaking, seen either by boat, airplane or mokoro. The main choices are to go on safari in Moremi Game Reserve or stay at one or two of the many lodges. The animals, as outlined below, the birding, flora and fauna are spectacular. There are some amazing lodges like Oddballs Camp Media:okavangodelta.info, and Delta Camp. A trip called the Trans Okavango takes you from the top of the Okavango Delta to Maun.
Tsodilo Hills a 10 sq km area UNESCO World Heritage Site [6] due to its 4500 rock paintings. It's about a 40 km drive along a good grade dirt road from Shakawe.

Go. It's amazing. Fabulous. One the most magical places in the entire world. The budget minded can take the bus from Maun to Sepopa. There is now a river taxi that travels daily from Sepopa to Seronga and coordinates with the buses. If your timing is off stay at Swamp Stop overnight. In Seronga you can stay at the Polers Trust and enjoy the mekoro trips.
Much of the area is divided into large concessions run by various safari groups. Development is strictly regulated so that there is little development and lots of wildlife. It is expensive, but worth it to stay in some of these permanent tented campsites. The guides are knowledgeable, and the accommodations very comfortable. Wilderness Safaris runs many great camps. They are all inclusive: two wildlife rides a day, all meals, snacks and drinks are included in the price.
The University of Botswana's Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre HOORC was established in 1994 in response to the need to understand the natural and human processes that shape the Delta, which became a Ramsar Wetland of International Significance in December 1996. HOORC's multidisciplinary research teams provide the science to support the work of local, national and regional planning bodies such as Botswana's Okavango Delta Management Plan and OKACOM the Okavango River Basin Water Commmission. This delta in north-west Botswana comprises permanent marshlands and seasonally flooded plains. It is one of the very few major interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean, with a wetland system that is almost intact. One of the unique characteristics of the site is that the annual flooding from the River Okavango occurs during the dry season, with the result that the native plants and animals have synchronized their biological cycles with these seasonal rains and floods. It is an exceptional example of the interaction between climatic, hydrological and biological processes. The Okavango Delta is home to some of the world’s most endangered species of large mammal, such as the cheetah, white rhinoceros, black rhinoceros, African wild dog and lion.

Botswana has a huge advantage over the rest of the world when it comes to attracting tourists: the wildlife. The array of animals that reside in or pass through the country is phenomenal. Ranging from endangered animals such as wild dogs and rhinos to the numerous and thriving bird life that inhabits the area.
The natural landscapes are impressive too from the vast and imposing Kalahari Desert to the sublime serenity of the Okavango Delta. The terrain here can feel vast and empty in some areas or dense and teeming with life in others but it is always a thing of beauty. The landscape is at once recognizable as African and will live up to all of your pre-trip expectations.
1. Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is one of the most inspiring and awe-inspiring wilderness locations in Africa, if not the entire planet. The Delta is a truely unspoiled wilderness with terrain ranging from dry grasslands to swamps. Safaris and game watching are the most popular activities in the park and possible animals to be sighted include cheetahs, zebra, giraffes, elephants, crocodiles and rhinos to name only a few. Trips should be properly planned because, although the terrain here is always stunning, the seasons can dramatically effect your chances of seeing certain animals.
2. Moremi Game Reserve
Voted the best game reserve in the African continent in 2008, this park has a lot going for it. It is the first reserve that was solely founded by local residents who were growing ever more concerened about natural and man-made threats to the local enviroment and wildlife. Situated on the east side of the Okavango Delta, the reserve offers some of the most stunning scenery in the country and boasts an equally impressive ecosystem. Many tourists choose to visit the park by self-drive campervan but the park also has a number of great campsites.
3.Maun
Maun is often used by tourists as a stepping stone for the Okavango Delta but it has enough about it to merit a few nights stay. The hotels, restaurants and tourist amenities here are some of the best in the country, largely due to the fact that the city is the main tourist stop in the country. Whilst the town itself does not have much going for it, it still attracts a wide range of people from luxury safari travelers to volounteers. There are some great campsites that are located by the river, providing a great place to stay for a few nights.
4. Gaborone
The city of Gaborone is the largest in Botswana and also its capital. The modern buildings of Gaborone set against the tropical backdrops of this African nation are an unusual sight and despite its size, there are not too many reasons to visit the city. The large residential areas are supplemented by a few decent hotels and restaurants. The modern feel of the city is reinforced by its lack of history but it is certainly paving the way for the countries future and for this reason it is a good place to experience the vibe of 21st Century Botswana.
5.Chobe National Park
This game reserve is the third largest in Botswana but it has one of the largest concentrations of rare game animals in the continent of Africa. The national park takes its name from the Chobe River which, at first glance is guaranteed to take your breathe away. As well as being a beautiful sight, the river supports an ecosystem of rare and exotic creatures including birds, elephants, lions, giraffes, baboons and buffalo. During the winter season it is possible to see a herd of hundreds of elephants at a time; a truely once in a lifetime experience.

During my trip to South Africa I had the chance to spend over two weeks in the African bush. I visited five different safari camps, four were in Sabi Sands and the Klaserie Nature Reserve. The fifth one is located in the Gondwana Game Reserve. Here are the top 5 safari camps to visit in South Africa.
Umkumbe Safari Lodge is located just outside the iconic Kruger National Park, in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. Umkumbe is considered to be one of the best wildlife viewing regions in all of South Africa. The Okavango Delta is generally considered safe for travelers, although as with any part of Africa necessary precautions should always be taken. The Okavango is home to many potentially dangerous animals (including, but not limited to, the Nile Crocodile, Lion and Hippo) but attacks on tourists are virtually unheard of, it is best to closely follow the instructions of your guide at all times.

Malaria, along with many other mosquito-borne illnesses, can be present within the Okavango and thus preventive measures are imperative. It is important to note that the occurrence of mosquito-borne illnesses is much higher in the wet season (the same is true for any tropical location.)

1 - Kalahari Basin
The Kalahari Desert lies in the Kalahari Basin, which is enormous, about five times the size of France, and the Basin covers all of Botswana and parts of her surrounding countries. The Kalahari Basin was created 135 million years ago when South America, Asia and Australia tore themselves away from Africa. The power of this event and of the secondary volcanic and earth shuddering activity it caused lifted the edges of southern Africa like a bowl, creating the Basin. Over many millions of years this part of the world passed through extremely dry periods, during which fierce sand storms dumped layer upon layer of sand into the basin. And today, 65 million years later, this is the oldest and largest stretch of sand on our planet.
2 - Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari is currently in the wet period of its 65 million year history. It's most outstanding physical feature is the living desert. The sands of the Kalahari Desert have mostly been blown there rather than transported by water and thus are not very fertile. Even so, after good rains, grass is plentiful and this supports an astounding diversity of life. The Kalahari Desert is the last refuge of the San or Bushmen, who have roamed Southern Africa for the last 30 000 years and are now on the verge of extinction. 3 - Lake Makgadikgadi
At some stage in this 65 million year period large Rivers flowed into the Kalahari Basin, creating a giant lake which in turn emptied into the Indian Ocean via the Limpopo River. And then about 50 000 years ago, due to the numerous fault lines in the area, all but the Okavango River were diverted, and the Lake began to shrink. Until about 10 000 years ago another fault effectively dammed the Okavango River creating the delta and leaving the Lake to become the largest the salt pan complex in the world, the Makgadikgadi Pans – an amazing expanse of whiteness the size Switzerland.
2 days in Maun, Botswana. An amazing African adventure
I had the great pleasure of visiting the wonderful country of Botswana. It is such a welcoming country with friendly people, amazing wildlife and superb attractions.
I got to spend two wonderful days in the northern village of Maun on the Okavango Delta where you can glide through pristine waterways on a morkoro and observe wildlife in its natural habitat.
I went on a midday game walk which meant there were less animals to see as many were sleeping, hidden from the harsh midday sun. But I still got to see zebra, hippos, donkeys, cows, crocodiles, spotted tree frogs, wilderbeest, and deer. And I had a sip of the sweet Okavango waters.
I stayed at the Old Bridge Backpackers ( and it was a magical place to stay. Great tent. Excellent bar. Good food. And a mighty big fig tree to laze under by the river and daydream.
I can't wait to get back to Africa. I love it!
