Dingle town & peninsula, Ireland
We've been exploring the West Coast of Ireland and now we’re heading for Dingle which some people would say is the finest destination in the country. Dingle is a lush green peninsula extending out into the Atlantic Ocean.

We stop by the roadside for a lovely view looking down towards the coast and across the green fields.
Next stop, Dingle, our home base for the next couple days. The town is one of Ireland's best with excellent hotels, of course many pubs, and in recent years, Dingle has become one of the gourmet capitals of the country with many fine restaurants. We will be taking you inside a couple of them. The drive in gave us a nice overview and will be taking you on several walks through town.
Most visitors find the real attraction is the surrounding areas with the beautiful countryside and the historic sites. With a few minute’s drive, you are at the edge of town and beyond that, you're in the countryside almost immediately.
So we hop in our van and do a tour of the peninsula. It's not unusual to run into some rain when you're out here in the far tip of Europe, in the Atlantic Ocean. And we had some rain this morning, but it cleared up a little bit during the day.
Dingle is a peninsula sticking into the sea at the western edge of Europe, set amid wild green scenery surrounded by the ocean.
One of the main historic sites you'll see is Dunbeg Fort. It's quite typical of the Celtic fortresses of the Iron Age in Ireland. It's built right up against the edge of a cliff, so it's easy to defend itself with the big walls on one side and the sea cliff on the other.

To the northwest, Gallarus Oratory is an ancient dry-stone church with sloping sides. Clifftop Dún Beag is a prehistoric promontory fort to the southwest.

Dingle has a mild, temperate climate and substantial rainfall year-round. It’s warmest in the summer (Jul–Aug), which is also peak season. Coastal scenery, hills and ancient sites are all featured in the Dingle Walking Festival (Feb). Féile na Bealtaine (Mar/Apr/May) arts festival brings exhibitions, concerts, street theatre and events to town. Dingle Races (Aug) is a horse racing event held at Ballintaggart. Local cuisine is offered at Dingle Food Festival (Sep/Oct), with a taste trail, street entertainments and music.

The Town of Ennis (First Day in Ireland)
After getting off the plane and picking up the car, we headed to some town we didn't see too much to do in, then headed over to Ennis which was a GREAT place to shop and stay. Found the Temple Gate Hotel to stay in for the night (no air-conditioning or fans). It sits on the site of an old convent (ha ha, closest I'll ever get into one or would want to) and their food was just great. My friend and neighbor ordered fresh mussels and they brought a HUGE pot of them out for about 7 Euros. She was thrilled! The pictures with the pretty ceiling and architecture was the dining/pub. We ate at this one place the next day that had 1/4 natural Irish beef burgers. My friend eats meat so she thought it sounded great. We know what a quarter pound burger is here, so we had a good laugh when the meat was only the size of a quarter! The bun was huge all around it. Not worth 8 Euros!

Now, we're here at the Lughnasa festival and Lughnasa comes from Lugh who was the God of arts and crafts.

So, we're just outside the fisherman's cottage so its a kind of humble setting and we're about to see how butter is made.
So we're going to visit an old tyle schoolhouse now from the nineteenth century. And talk to the head teacher. Just about what education back then was all about.

Well this is a circus. I put it in the category of circus. But actually it's a bit of physical theatre, acrobatics and also object manipulation.

So this would have been a typical helmet. Its Viking times. Viking Times. Right. Like that idea about the horns coming out of it, that's only Hollywood.

Quin - County Clare
