Japan Travel - Hiking the Samurai Trail (from Magome to Tsumago) in Kiso Valley, Japan
Natasha Rooney is in Kiso Valley with Liam on this hike in Japan. They are walking from Magome to Tsumago, two of 69 towns along the Nakasendo route -- also called the Samurai Trail, -- connecting Tokyo and Kyoto.
The Kiso Valley is famous for its hiking trails and pretty and historic post towns, which have been preserved and offer accommodation for day trippers who are walking or touring by bus. Look for the ichirizuka - distance markers, denoting every 3.9 km (or one ri). For more information, see
The trail between Tsumago and Magome is the best preserved section of the Nakasendo and takes about 2-3 hours. This includes stopping at the Friends of Tsumago teahouse and viewing the 2 waterfalls, O-daki and Me-daki. Read more at

It's called the Nakasendo Trail, a 533-kilometre route through the spectacular mountains that once linked Kyoto, the home of the Japanese emperor, with Edo, the political capital (now known as Tokyo).
Much of the original trail has been covered with roads, railways and pachinko parlours, but some of the original legs remain, wending through forests, rice paddies and historic wooden villages. In some places, the trail has scarcely changed in hundreds of years, and is as close to authentic old Japan as you'll ever find.
