Okinawa was once divided by three kingdoms: Hokuzan in the north of the island, Chuzan in the central area, and Nanzan in the south. After his conquest of the Hokuzan Kingdom in 1416, the king of the Chuzan Kingdom Sho Hashi overthrew the Nanzan Kingdom in 1429 and unified Okinawa to found the Ryukyu Kingdom. A deserted ruin of Nanzan-jo Castle in Itoman City still retains a memory of the Nanzan Kingdom's prosperity.
