[dt.] Oberwesel liegt inmitten des Oberen Mittelrheintals bei Stromkilometer 550.
Die Stadt blickt auf eine lange Geschichte zurück, denn bereits um 50 v. Chr siedelten hier die Kelten und zur Römerzeit war Oberwesel eine Station an der römischen Heerstraße. Im Mittelalter erlebte die Stadt ihre Blütezeit als Handels-, Handwerker- und Weinstadt.
Noch heute prägen die Spuren des Mittelalters das Stadtbild und die Stadt ist bemüht dieses Erbe zu erhalten. Durch eine Bürgerinitiative wurde der Bauverein Historische Stadt Oberwesel e.V gegründet, der mit Unterstützung der Rheinland-pfälzischen Landesregierung z.B. die Stadtmauer saniert hat. Heute kann man über viele Stellen der Stadtmauer wandern und die Stadt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven betrachten. Von den ursprünglich 22 Wehrtürmen sind heute noch 16 erhalten. Einige können bestiegen werden, andere sind bewohnt oder werden für Veranstaltungen genutzt. Die Stadtmauer ist die am besten erhaltene Ringmauer am Mittelrhein.
Nicht ohne Grund wird Oberwesel als Stadt der Türme und des Weines bezeichnet, denn auf den Steillagen des Mittelrheintals mit ihrem Schieferboden und günstigem Klima werden Weine von Spitzenqualität erzeugt. Im Ort mit malerischen Fachwerkhäusern laden Weingüter und Gasthäuser zum Verweilen ein.
Über der Stadt thront die Burg Schönburg aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Seit 1950 im Besitz der Stadt Oberwesel beherbergt die Burg eine internationale Jugendherberge und das Burghotel.
Fährt man von Oberwesel rheinabwärts erreicht man nach wenigen Kilometern die Loreley.
Seit 2002 ist die Kulturlandschaft Oberes Mittelrheintal in der Liste der UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.

The city has a long history, already around 50 BC the Celts settled here, and under the Romans, Oberwesel was a station on a Roman military road. In the Middle Ages, the city experienced its heyday as a trade, crafts and wine-growing town.
Still today, the traces of the Middle Ages characterize the city. The city of Oberwesel undertakes a lot of effort to preserve this heritage, e.g. with the foundation of the Bauverein Historische Stadt Oberwesel e.V (Historic Building Association of Oberwesel ). One project was the reconstruction of the city wall with support of the Rhineland Palatine Land government. Today, you can walk over many parts of the city wall and look at the city from different angles. Today, 16 out of the original 22 towers are well-preserved. Some can be climbed, others are inhabited or are used as location for events. The city wall is the best preserved city walls in the Middle Rhine.
Not without reason Oberwesel is called the city of towers and wine, because of the steep slopes of the Middle Rhine Valley with its slate soil combined with a favorable climate, the region produces highest quality wines. In the city with picturesque half-timbered houses, wine farms and guesthouses invite to stay.
The imposing castle, the Schönburg from the 12th century towers above the city. Since 1950 in the possession of the city, the castle houses an international youth hostel and the castle hotel.
Only a few kilometers downstream one reaches the Lorelei, the famous rock on the eastern bank of the Rhine.
Since 2002, the cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is part the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Adorable and Charming Town #5: Sheila's Favorite Oberwesel on the Rhine
Both Oberwesel and St. Goar are in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley (I still think “Upper - Middle” is an oxymoron), and an ideal starting point for walks on foot or by bicycle, car, rail or boat up and down the Rhine and its regions.
Out of the 9-10 medieval towns visited on this holiday, it is a close tie between Oberwesel and Rhens as to the best of the best with Oberwesel slightly ahead. Just amazing...

The Speyer Cathedral, officially the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen, in Speyer, Germany, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Speyer and is suffragan to the Archdiocese of Bamberg.
The cathedral, which is dedicated to St. Mary, patron saint of Speyer (Patrona Spirensis) and St. Stephen is generally known as Kaiserdom zu Speyer (Imperial Cathedral of Speyer).
Pope Pius XI raised Speyer Cathedral to the rank of a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church in 1925.
Begun in 1030 under Konrad II, with the east end and high vault of 1090-1103, the imposing triple-aisled vaulted basilica of red sandstone is the culmination of a design which was extremely influential in the subsequent development of Romanesque architecture during the 11th and 12th centuries.
As the burial site for Salian, Staufer and Habsburg emperors and kings the cathedral is regarded as a symbol of imperial power.
With the Abbey of Cluny in ruins, it remains the largest Romanesque church.
It is considered to be a turning point in European architecture, one of the most important architectural monuments of its time and one of the finest Romanesque monuments.
In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites as a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire.
Originally, the cathedral was surrounded by numerous buildings.
To the south it was adjoined by a cloister with a sculpture of The Mount of Olives in its centre.
On the northern side was the palatial bishop's residence.
Other buildings nearby, for example, were the chapter house, rectory, archives, St. Nikolaus Chapel, town fortifications etc.
Most of the buildings disappeared after the French Revolution.
The outline of the former cloister can be seen as pavement.
The sculpture of The Mount of Olives was destroyed in the great fire of 1689 and left in ruins after the rubble of the cloister was removed in 1820 in order to create some open space.
Later it was fitted with a roof to prevent further deterioration.
The sculptures were supplemented by the Speyer sculptor, Gottfried Renn.
In the square at the western end of the cathedral is a large bowl known as Domnapf.
It formerly marked the boundary between the episcopal and municipal territories.
