Palairos is an ancient city and a modern town in Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform Palairos is part of the municipality Aktio-Vonitsa, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 205.843 km2. The municipal unit was formed as the independent municipality Kekropia in 1994 from the former communities Palairos and Pogonia, and was expanded with the former communities Vatos, Plagia and Peratia as a part of the 1997 Kapodistrias reform. The name was changed to Palairos in 2004.

Monument Attractions In Palairos

1. Monument of Zalongo Kamarina
The Monument of Zalongo is a 1961 monumental sculpture by George Zongolopoulos, commemorating the Dance of Zalongo, a mass suicide of women and children in 1803. It is located at 700 meters altitude on Mount Zalongo, near Preveza, Greece, from which it is visible. The closest village is Kamarina. One can access the monument from Saint Dimitrios Monastery , which leads to the top via a cobbled lane of 410 steps. The monument depicts six abstract female figures holding hands. It is 18 meters in length, 13 meters high and is made of concrete supported by 4,300 whitish limestone blocks . The construction took six years, from 1954 to 1960, and was financed by two Pan-Hellenic student fundraising drives.

Palairos is an ancient city and a modern seaside community Sterea or Central Greece, located 104 km from Messolonghi and 358 from Athens. It is very busy in the summer and has a modern harbor which hosts numerous sailboats and boats for day cruises which to the surrounding islands of the Ionian Sea. Palairos has great sandy beaches, many hotels, and campsites. The most important preserved ruins are in the Archaeological Site of Sterna, in several ancient villages in the surrounding area. The castle from the Ancient Town, the Venetian Castle in Plagia, and the monasteries and old churches are also worth visiting.

Cliff Bay Hotel on the outskirts of Paleros is set in tranquil surroundings with great views of the sea and the surrounding area. The hotel has a nice pool area and a good tavern. From the hotel you can stroll along the sea to the port of Paleros, where there are small shops, tavernas and cafes. Going the other way you’ll the Potamaki beach. We experienced excellent service from the staff, clean and tidy rooms and a well kept garden.
