Petronell-Carnuntum - Austria HD Travel Channel
Petronell Carnuntum near Hainburg in the far east of Lower Austria was the most important Roman settlement on Austrian territory.
The best known monument is the Heidentor (heathen gate), once erected at a former cross-road and at that time, probably an emperor statue was inside.
Both the camp and the civilian town had their own amphitheater at their disposal. Trajan determined the town as capital of Upper Pannonia and Hadrian declared it Municipium. During the Marcomannic Wars Marcus Aurelius pitched his headquarters at this location. Here, Septimus Severus was proclaimed by his troops Roman Emperor. In 350, an earthquake destroyed a large portion of the town. After that it was only frontier town against the Quadi (Germanic tribe) and Sarmatians (iranian people).
Today, Carnuntum is developed to an archaeological park. Roman houses are partially restored to their original state and resurrect the lives of the Romans. Annual Roman games are very popular by families with children.
The Archaeological Park Carnuntum opens daily from end of March till mid of November.

Bekanntestes Denkmal ist das Heidentor, das an einer damaligen Straßenkreuzung errichtet wurde und im Inneren vermutlich eine Kaiserstatue beherbergte.
Sowohl das Heerlager als auch die Zivilstadt verfügten über ein eigenes Amphitheater. Der Ort wurde von Trajan zur Hauptstadt Oberpannoniens bestimmt, von Hadrian zum Municipium. Während der Markomannenkriege schlug Marc-Aurel hier sein Hauptquartier auf. Septimus Severus wurde hier von seinen Truppen zum römischen Kaiser ausgerufen. Im Jahre 350 zerstörte ein Erdbeben einen großen Teil der Stadt. Danach war sie nur noch Frontstadt gegen die Quaden (Volksstamm der Germanen) und Sarmaten (iranischen Reitervölker).
Heute wird Carnuntum zum Archäologie Park ausgebaut. Römische Häuser werden teilweise wieder in ihren ursprünglichen Zustand versetzt und lassen das Leben der Römer wieder auferstehen. Jährlich stattfindende Römerspiele machen es auch bei Familien mit Kindern beliebt.
Der Archäologische Park Carnuntum ist von Ende März bis Mitte November täglich geöffnet.

Klagenfurt - Austria HD Travel Channel
Klagenfurt, the provincial capital of Carinthia in Austria, is located on the east shore of the alpine lake Wörthersee.
According to legend, the city was founded at the place where brave men killed a winged dragon which lived in the moors next to the lake. A majestic sculpture, cast in one piece, adorns the Lindwurm-fountain in the city center which became the new emblem of the city. A skull of a glacial wool rhino, found in the Zollfeld plain, was the template for the head. In reality, the city was founded by the Carinthian Duke Herrmann from the Rhine-Frankish family of Spanheimer, to secure the transport routes.
After earthquake and a plague of locusts, the city was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1514. As Emperor Maximilian I. had no money for reconstruction, he donated the city to the country's estates, until then a unique process. Thereupon the city experienced a real prosperity. At that time, the Landhaus was built, now the seat of the State Assembly. In the great hall of arms, decorated with more than 650 coat of arms of the nobility estates, the donation is shown on one of the paintings. On the opposite wall, you see the enthronement of the Carinthian Duke at the Prince's Stone in Karnburg. Karnburg was the center of the Slavic empire Carantania. At the foot of the painting you see the Prince's
Stone, the oldest monument of medieval law in Carinthian history.
The ceiling fresco shows the hereditary homage of emperor Karl VI. In 1728.
The cathedral is regarded to be the most important Protestant church building in the German-speaking room although it is Roman Catholic since 1604.
At the Old Square, you see the Portrait of a bakers' boy who was wrongly executed for stealing. A saga says that after his innocence was proven, the name of the city of Klagenfurt derived from this event.

Klagenfurt, die Landeshauptstadt Kärntens, Österreich, liegt am Ostufer des Wörthersees.
Der Sage nach wurde die Stadt dort gegründet, wo man einen im Sumpf hausenden Drachen tötete, der als mächtige Skulptur, aus einem Stück gegossen, den Lindwurmbrunnen auf dem Neuen Platz ziert und zum Wahrzeichen der Stadt wurde. Die Vorlage für den Kopf lieferte der Schädel eines im Zollfeld gefundenen eiszeitlichen Wollnashorns. Tatsächlich wurde die Stadt vom Kärntner Herzog Herrmann aus dem rheinfränkischen Geschlecht der Spanheimer zur Sicherung der Transportwege gegründet.
Nach Erdbeben und einer Heuschreckenplage wurde die Stadt 1514 durch einen Brand fast vollständig zerstört. Da Kaiser Maximilian I. kein Geld für den Wiederaufbau hatte, verschenkte er die Stadt an die Landesstände, ein bis dahin einzigartiger Vorgang. Die Stadt erlebte daraufhin eine wahre Blüte. Damals wurde auch das Landhaus errichtet, heute Sitz der Landesregierung. Die Schenkung ist auf einem der Gemälde im großen Wappensaal, der mit über 650 Wappen des landesständischen Adels geschmückt ist, zu sehen. An der gegenüberliegenden Wand ist die Einsetzung des Kärntner Herzogs am Fürstenstein bei Karnburg abgebildet. Karnburg bildete den Mittelpunkt des slawischen Reiches Karantanien. Zu Füssen des Gemäldes liegt der Fürstenstein, ältestes Rechtsdenkmal mittelalterlicher Kärntner Geschichte.
Das Deckengemälde zeigt die Erbhuldigung Kaiser Karls VI. im Jahre 1728.
Der Dom gilt als bedeutendster protestantischer Kirchenbau im deutschsprachigen Raum, obwohl er seit 1604 katholisch ist.
Am Alten Platz ist das Bildnis eines zu Unrecht wegen Diebstahls hingerichteten Bäckerjungen zu sehen. Eine Sage sagt, dass nachdem seine Unschuld bewiesen war, dieses Ereignis namensgebend für die Stadt Klagenfurt war.

Sesklo - Greece HD Travel Channel
Sesklo in Central Greece, is one of the oldest settlements and the first acropolis of Greece, 10 km west of Volos, the place where the Argonauts started their journey. First settlement finds are dated from 6000 BC. The village Sesklo gave its name to a whole culture, the Sesklo culture, a period in the early days of the Neolithic in Greece. The post houses with mud walls were erected on stone foundations, which are still preserved. The acropolis contained already 500 houses, which at that time was a considerable size.
During our visit, an English female doctoral candidate was busy with cataloging 40.000 bones.

Sésklo in Mittelgriechenland, eine der ältesten Siedlungen und die erste Akropolis Griechenlands, liegt 10 km westlich von Volos, dem Ort von dem die Argonauten zu ihrer Reise aufbrachen.
Erste Siedlungsfunde werden auf 6000 v. Chr. datiert. Der Ort gab einer Periode in der Frühzeit des Neolithikums in Griechenland ihren Namen, die Sesklo-Kultur.
Die Pfostenhäuser mit Lehmwänden wurden auf steinernen Fundamenten errichtet, die heute noch vorhanden sind. Die Akropolis umfasste bereits 500 Häuser, was in jener Zeit einer beträchtlichen Größe entsprach.
Bei unserem Besuch war eine einsame englische Doktorandin damit beschäftigt 40.000 Knochen zu katalogisieren.
