Panama's Caribbean Coast: Portobelo and Isla Grande
Panama's Caribbean coast is a whole other world, just 2 hours north of the city. Portobelo is a Spanish stonghold town along the mainland coast with forts and old-world charm. Isla Grande is a tropical treasure of fishing village, breathtaking beach, & thick jungle.

콜럼버스가 발견했다는 이 마을은 대서양의 푸른 바다와 어우러져 정말 이름 그대로 아름다운 항구였다. 마을 어귀의 작은 박물관에서 포르토벨로의 역사를 더듬어 볼 수 있다. 콜럼버스의 발견 이후 이곳은 신대륙의 풍요로운 부를 스페인으로 옮기기 위한 중요한 항구로 발전하였다. 지리적으로나 지형적으로 이상적인 조건을 가지고 있었기에 포르토벨로에는 큰 시장 이 열렸고 크게 번성하였다. 16세기 말에는 해적의 공격에 대비하여 튼튼한 요새가 구축되기도 했다. 마을 입구에는 아직도 스페인 정복자들이 해적의 공격에 대비해 만든 요새와 대포가 남아있다. 포르토벨로는 결국 1668년 헨리 모르간이 이끄는 해적의 공격을 받아 시 전체가 완전히 파괴되는 아픔을 겪게 된다. 400년의 세월을 넘어 여전히 바다를 향하고 있는 대포를 보며 나는 역사의 아이러니를 느낀다. 정복한 도시를 또 다른 침략자로부터 지키기 위해 전전긍긍했을 정복자들. 그들이 두려움에 찬 눈으로 이 망루에서 바라보았을 대서양의 끝없는 바다를 나는 바라보고 또 바라본다.
