On the Comté River south of the capital, Cacao is a popular day trip from Cayenne. Hmong refugees transplanted from Laos in the 1970s are the main ethnic group in this small Asian village of wooden stilt houses. Sunday is the best day to visit, when the popular market features Hmong embroidery and weaving, as well as local noodle soups.

9. Musée Départemental De Franconie, Cayenne
Near the Place de Palmistes, Cayenne's liveliest plaza, the Musée Départemental De Franconie offers an overview of the country's history, as well as its flora and fauna. The museum tucks into a simple wooden Creole house built in the 19th century by the Franconie family.

8. Camp de la Transportation
In the border town of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, at the chilling Camp de la Transportation, prisoners arrived for processing and transfer to penal colonies throughout the territory. After walking through the same gates as former inmates, Alfred Dreyfus and Papillon, you can see rusty shackles and solitary confinement cells with tiny windows.

7. Pirogue River Trip
Paddling along a jungle-fringed river in a local boat is an exhilarating way to explore French Guiana's seemingly impenetrable wilderness. The rivers flow through the heart of the steamy jungle and are the best way to travel between remote villages and see wildlife in its natural habitat, including capybara, caiman, and monkeys. Typically, guides offer cruises in pirogues, dugout canoes carved from local wood.

6. Remire-Montjoly Beach
If you're seeking a beach fix, you'll find Cayenne's best stretch of sand and sea at Remire-Montjoly. The beaches in French Guiana are typically wild, windswept affairs, and this beach is no different, but it does have a narrow, strip of golden shoreline that is great for sunbathing, and palms and lush greenery fringe the sand, providing welcome patches of shade.

5. Zoo de Guyane
Jaguars, sloths, agoutis, crocodiles, howler monkeys, anteaters, and a panoply of birds, such as toucans and macaws are just some of the residents at Zoo de Guyane. The focus is on animals native to French Guiana, so this is a great place to get acquainted with the country's wildlife before you venture into the wilderness.

4. Tresor Nature Reserve, Kaw
A 1.5- to 2-hour drive from Cayenne, the wildlife-rich marshes of Kaw cover thousands of square kilometers. The Tresór Nature Reserve encompasses a huge area of the Kaw ecosystem and is a great place to observe black caimans, a smaller relative of the American alligator, as well as a rich diversity of bird life such as the scarlet ibis.

3. Guiana Space Centre
Apparently, rockets and rainforests are a good mix in French Guiana. In 1964, the French government chose this jungle-fringed slice of equatorial coast near Kourou for a space center, thanks to its low population density and distance from storm tracks and earthquake zones.

2. Hattes Beach
In the northwest corner of French Guiana, Plage les Hattes at Awala-Yalimapo is the most important single nesting site in the world for giant leatherback turtles. During the peak season from April to July, more than 80 leatherbacks lumber up the beach in a single night.

In 1931, Frenchman Henri Charrière was convicted of a murder he did not commit. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at the penal colony on Devil's Island, one of the infamous Îles du Salut, where shark-infested waters lash the rocky shores. The ruins of 17th-century Fort Cépérou overlook the capital, Cayenne, with its colorful Creole houses and street markets. Shops and cafes surround the palm-filled main square, Place des Palmistes. The Rémire-Montjoly suburb is lined with Atlantic coast beaches. To the northwest is the coastal town of Kourou, home to the Guiana Space Centre, a spacecraft launch site and museum offering guided tours. Offshore are the Îles du Salut, comprising 3 small islands with the ruins of a notorious penal colony known as Devils Island, portrayed in Henri Charrières book “Papillon.” Huge leatherback turtles come ashore, notably in the Awala-Yalimapo commune on the Suriname border, during nesting season. La Guyane (prononcé [gɥi.ˈjan] ; lagwiyan en créole) est une région et un département d'outre-mer (DROM) français d'Amérique du Sud. Son code Insee est le 973. Avec une superficie de 83 846 km22, la Guyane est le plus grand département français, la plus grande région de France (plus de 15% de la surface de la France métropolitaine) et la moins peuplée après Mayotte. C'est également le département le plus boisé, 96 % du territoire étant couvert d'une forêt équatoriale qui reste parmi les plus riches et les moins écologiquement fragmentées du monde.
Le territoire guyanais fait partie des neuf régions ultrapériphériques (RUP) de l'Union européenne. C'est le plus grand territoire continental de l'Union européenne en Amérique du Sud et aussi le seul ; les autres territoires d'États membres de l'Union européenne environnant (les Antilles néerlandaises, Malouines et Géorgie du Sud-et-les Îles Sandwich du Sud) ont le statut de pays et territoires d'outre-mer et sont donc, de fait, en dehors de celle-ci.
La Guyane est le seul territoire d'Amérique Latine à ne pas constituer un État indépendant sur ce continent.
Son nom officiel est « Guyane ». L'ajout de l'adjectif « française » dans les dénominations courantes est une commodité de langage issue de la période coloniale et aujourd'hui obsolète dans la mesure où il n'y a plus à notre époque en français d'ambiguïté quant à la Guyane considérée. En effet il existe plusieurs Guyanes : le Guyana (ancienne Guyane britannique ou anglaise), le Suriname (ancienne Guyane néerlandaise ou hollandaise) et la Guyane. Elles s'intègrent au sein du plateau des Guyanes avec une partie du Venezuela, délimité par le fleuve Orénoque, et le nord du Brésil, délimité par l'Amazone.
