Ripley is a town on Lake Erie in the westernmost part of Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 2,415 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Eleazer Wheelock Ripley, a general in the War of 1812. There are no incorporated villages in the town, but there is one census-designated place: the hamlet of Ripley. The town is perhaps best known as being the western end of the New York State Thruway.

  • 2. John Rankin House Ripley
    John Rankin was an American Presbyterian minister, educator and abolitionist. Upon moving to Ripley, Ohio in 1822, he became known as one of Ohio's first and most active conductors on the Underground Railroad. Prominent pre-Civil War abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison, Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe were influenced by Rankin's writings and work in the anti-slavery movement. When Henry Ward Beecher was asked after the end of the Civil War, Who abolished slavery?, he answered, Reverend John Rankin and his sons did.

    John Michael Katko is an American attorney and politician. A Republican, he has represented New York's 24th district in the United States House of Representatives since 2015. Katko was an Assistant United States Attorney who served as chief of the organized crime division at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Syracuse, where he helped to prosecute gang members under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
