Riverhead is a town within Suffolk County, New York, on the north shore of Long Island. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,506. The town rests on the mouth of the Peconic River, from which it derives its name. Since 1727, Riverhead has been the county seat of Suffolk County. The smaller hamlet of Riverhead lies within it, and is the town's principal economic center. The town is 166 miles southwest of Boston via the Orient Point-New London Ferry, and is 76 miles northeast of New York City.   • 2. Riverhead Raceway Riverhead
    Riverhead Raceway is a quarter-mile oval race track with a Figure 8 course, located in Riverhead, New York. It is the only auto racing venue on Long Island since Westhampton Raceway closed down in 2003. It started being built in 1949 and opened as a dirt track in 1951, before permanently changing to asphalt in 1955. The Raceway was also well known for featuring a towering statue of a Native American, dubbed Chief Running Fair, at its entrance until it was destroyed in 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy.
