The Codex Purpureus is a greek Gospel dating between the end of the V th and the beginning of VI th Century AD, coming from the Middle East, brought in Rossano probably from some monk escaping out of East during the invasion of the Arabs (sec. IX-X). Another hypothesis is that the Codex has been received at the Cathedral of Rossano given as a gift from a Byzantine noble. In any case because of the stylistic and paleographic peculiarities it is probable that it was composed in Syria or Palestine, or, according to someone, most certainly in Antiochia on Oronte river. Remained hidden for centuries in the treasure of the Cathedral, is returned to light at the beginning of XIX th Century and then its been placed to the attention of world culture in 1879 by german historians O. Gebhart and A. von Harnack. Made in parchment color purple (hence the title purpureus ) the manuscript consists of 188 sheets (376 pages, approximately cm. 30 x 20) containing the greek text of the Gospels of Matthew and Mark (this latter partially complete) written in biblical capitals with elegant oncialis characters in gold and silver. Originally was a Gospel in four parts, as indicate the frontispiece with the Plate of Concordances where are the busts of four Evangelists. In this case the other two gospels were lost. The preciousness of this document depends on the antiquity and the writings material used, and on 14 miniated plates, reproducing many evangelical scenes, which give to the text an extraordinary fascination. The Codex Purpureus Rossanensis is considered the best example of greek miniated code among those existing in the world.

Il Codex purpureus è un evangelario greco miniato risalente tra la fine del V e linizio del VI sec. di origine mediorentale, portato a Rossano probabilmente da qualche monaco in fuga dall'oriente durante l'invasione degli arabi (sec. IX-X). Altra ipotesi vuole che il Codex sia pervenuto alla cattedrale di Rossano dato in dono da un nobile bizantino. In ogni caso per via delle caratteristiche paleografiche e stilistiche è probabile che sia stato composto in Siria o Palestina o, secondo alcuni, più certamente ad Antiochia sullOronte. Rimasto nascosto per secoli nel tesoro della Cattedrale, è tornato alla luce della cronaca ai primi dell'ottocento per poi essere posto all'attenzione della cultura mondiale nel 1879 ad opera soprattutto degli studiosi tedeschi O. Von Gebhart e A. Harnack. In pergamena color porpora, da cui la qualifica di porpureus il manoscritto si compone di 188 fogli (376 pagine, di circa cm. 30 x 20) contenenti il testo greco dei Vangeli di Matteo e Marco (questultimo parzialmente completo), scritto in maiuscola biblica con eleganti caratteri onciali in oro e argento. In origine doveva trattarsi di un Tetravangelo, come indica il frontespizio con la Tavola delle concordanze dove sono presenti i busti dei quattro Evangelisti. In tal caso gli altri due vangeli sono andati perduti. La preziosità del documento dipende dall'antichità e dal materiale scrittorio usato, e dalle 14 tavole miniate, riproducenti altrettante scene evangeliche, che danno al testo un fascino straordinario. E' da ritenere che il codice fosse destinato a rappresentare un simbolo da portare in processione o da esporre in occasioni particolari. Le pergamene purpuree erano, infatti, utilizzate nel mondo bizantino solo per i documenti più preziosi. Il Codex Purpureus Rossanensis rappresenta un indiscusso esempio di perfezione formale e di equilibrio compositivo e la sua unicità e antichità ne fanno indubbiamente un documento di valore inestimabile che riesce a catalizzare l'attenzione e l'interesse dei visitatori e degli studiosi di tutto il mondo. Non a caso è considerato il più alto esempio di codice greco miniato tra quelli esistenti al mondo.
UNA SCUOLA ABBANDONATA D'ALTRI TEMPI, L'ULTIMO ANNO SCOLASTICO FU IL 1960!
Ho trovato quasi per caso questa scuola abbandonata, che non è nemmeno visibile dalla strada. Essa è rimasta in funzione fino a circa il 1960. Venne costruita nei primi anni del '900 ed era utilizzata dai bambini d'una frazione agricola. Era una scuola elementare, ha visto il suo periodo d'oro nel 1930, dopo la seconda Guerra Mondiale ha iniziato un lento ma inesorabile declino.

Mentre scorre il mormorio dell’acqua, vado catturando immagini di un mondo che non c’è più, di un passato, di fontane, di vecchie mura, di travi di legno, di tempi che furono, di un mondo antico che sta esalando il suo ultimo respiro. Tuttavia, il borgo medioevale di Campana ha mantenuto il suo fascino. Un luogo meraviglioso, tranquillo, suggestivo, dove il desiderio di ricordare nomi, affetti, date e luoghi, si trasforma ogni volta in emozione e amore per le proprie origini, per le radici. Penso spesso ai miei nonni. Sicuramente mio nonno Filippo è stato il mio primo pilastro. Lui e mia nonna mi hanno cresciuto, a partire dalla tenera età di soli sei mesi, fino all'età di nove anni. Mio nonno è stato il mio eroe. Ero fiero di lui. Egli cavalcava un cavallo elegante e nobile, di razza andalusa. Una cavallina fiera, dalla chioma lunga. A mio nonno devo molti ricordi. Suggestioni impresse nel profondo della mia povera anima. Immagini, profumi e suoni che tornano sempre nei miei sogni, come in un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo. “Carminù, disse mio nonno, tu ora andrai a vivere in mezzo ai Germanesi, in mezzo ai Tedeschi, ma tu non appartieni a loro. Tu appartieni a noi, a Campana. In Germania forse ci dimenticherai, e se succederà, invano cercherai le tracce della tua gente, della tua terra. The Calabrian dialect of Greek, or Grecanic, is the variety of Italiot Greek used by the ethnic Griko people in Calabria, as opposed to the Italiot Greek dialect spoken in the Grecìa Salentina. Both are remnants of the Ancient and Byzantine Greek colonization of the region.
Calabrian Greek is mentioned in the Red Book of UNESCO on endangered languages, together with Griko. In addition, Euromosaic analyses and recognizes it as being an endangered and minority language in the European Union. It is mentioned by Ethnologue as a dialect of Modern Greek in the sense of a modern vernacular language of the Hellenic family (as is the case with Pontic and Tsakonian Greek).
However, Calabrian Greek has never experienced an extensive growth period during its history. It has only been used in basic day-to-day communications without ever playing a significant role in the fields of administration, literature or ecclesiastical matters.
