The mining town or Røros was established in 1644 after the discovery of ore in the area - mainly copper. It has been an active mining town from that time and up until 1977 when mining here was ceased. Røros is a very culturally and historically rich town in Norway and is 1 of 7 UNESCO world cultural heritage sites in Norway.
