The Rübeland Railway is a railway link from Blankenburg via Rübeland and Königshütte to Tanne in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It was built by the Halberstadt-Blankenburg Railway between 1880 and 1886. The route length is 30.6 kilometres, the height difference over 300 metres. The seven kilometre long section from Königshütte to Tanne was closed in 1968 and the five kilometres from Elbingerode to Königshütte followed suit on 30 August 2000, the last train to Königshütte having run in 1999. The name Rübeland Railway was first used when the railway was nationalised. Previously it had been known as the Harz Railway .

1. Hermannshohle Rubeland
Hermann's Cave , together with Baumann's Cave, is one of two show caves in the village of Rübeland near the town of Wernigerode, in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.The cave was formed out of the Devonian limestone of the Elbingerode complex during the shaping of the Bode Valley. It was discovered in 1866 during road works and was soon opened up to visitors. As a result of being protected early on its rich dripstone stalactites and stalagmites have been largely preserved. The cave is well known for, amongst other things, the discovery of numerous bones of cave bears, cave wolves and cave hyenas. The cave was comprehensively surveyed by J. H. Klooß, Robert Nehring and Dr. Ing. Friedrich Stolberg . Progressive exploration since 1970 has uncovered and surveyed previously unknown...

2. Baumann's Cave Rubeland
Baumann's Cave is, like nearby Hermann's Cave, a show cave in Rübeland in the district of Harz and is Germany's oldest show cave. The grotto was formed in the Devonian limestone of the Elbingerode Complex at least since the Bode Valley was being shaped. The cave has been visited by man since the Stone Age and not first discovered in 1536 as many written accounts suggest. The year of discovery in 1536 in combination with the tale of the miner, Baumann, who is supposed to have discovered the cave, are part of a false story dating back to Nazi times when a politically suitable jubilee date was being sought. We take a return trip on the steeply inclined Rübeland Railway from Blankenburg to Rübeland behind BR95 1027, nicknamed Queen of the Mountains. The film starts as the loco runs round at Michaelstein, partway up where the train has to reverse to gain height. We then view the locomotive at Rübeland shed together with its older sister engine 95 6676 before rejoining the train for the run back to Blankenberg, which takes us over the Krockstein Viaduct between the Niebelsholz and Krumme Gube Tunnels.

PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION:

Let's take ride on the German narrow gauge from Wernigerode to the top of the Brocken on the Harz Ry. and Brocken Ry. in the Harz Mountains of Germany in 2001. On the way we meet other trains at Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke.

The 99 222 that is pulling our train is the last of class still running. Built in 1931, the engine is one of 3 of this class built. The other two were scrapped in the late '40s and early '50s

The train we are riding is pulled by one of the 2-10-2T Class 99 locomotives that are common on narrow gauge lines around Germany. The track gauge on this line is 1000mm or 3ft. 3 3/8inches.

The drivers on these engines are small.. 800 to 1000mm or 31 to 39.3 inches in diameter. They run at a boiler pressure of 14 Bar or about 200 PSI, burning coal. They have a maximum tractive effort of about 23,000 lbs.

Most of this video was shot from the platform of one of the passenger cars, moving from one side to other to get the engine as the train went around the many curves.
