From Kloten to Rümlang – a fantastic hike for aeroplane enthusiasts
My film of one of my favourite walks starts near the village of Kloten in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. This is Zurich Airport’s Runway 28, and aeroplanes from all parts of the world are landing every few minutes.
At Runway 14, two takeaway food stalls serve the public. Don’t miss the brief shot of the little girl in the red top, about halfway through: she approaches close to the fence just as a big jetliner comes in to land, but she doesn’t stay there long! It really is amazing how close the aviation authorities in Switzerland allow the public to get to the runways. This is illustrated by a silhouette shot of a man standing on a rise to take a photo of a plane that seems to be only a few metres away.
From Oberglatt I take the official, waymarked footpath (‘wanderweg’) to Rümlang. As well as aeroplanes, there is beautiful gentle countryside to enjoy. Where else in the world could you get so close to planes? Perhaps it’s to do with Switzerland being a neutral country.
Zurich Airport
Zürich Airport (IATA: ZRH, ICAO: LSZH) is located in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland. It is Switzerland's largest international flight gateway and hub to Swiss International Air Lines. It is partially in Kloten, partially in Rümlang,and partially in Oberglatt. Skyguide is responsible for all Air Traffic Control for Zürich.

The heliport is a popular spot for spotters on the Rümlanger side of Zurich Airport, directly at the airport fence near the Pistenkreuz (slopes 10/28 and 16/34). You can reach this photo point from Oberglatt and Glattbrug. Take the car on the flight path in the direction of Rümlang. Then turn into Klotenerstrasse, which ends at the airport fence. By bus you can reach the heliport as follows: Bus 510, from Zurich airport to Rümlang station. Then walk for 10 minutes in the direction of Flugofstrasse.

The location on the west side of Zurich Airport, with views of the intersection of runway 10/28 with 16/34, is one of the most popular lookout points for spotters. From April 28, 2017 invites a four-meter-high viewing platform with new catering offer to linger.
The popular spot for spotters is in the Zone West, one of the largest development areas still existing at Zurich Airport. The project will be realized in several stages. For the first part of the stage the excavators were already driven in the summer of 2016. At present, where the former heliport grill was, there are two new aircraft stands up to the size of a Boeing 777.

For the extension, the airport fence had to be relocated about 200 meters towards Rümlang. As a result, the spotters are no longer so close to the slopes in the future. But they can look forward to a new, directly on the staggered airport fence piled up and over four meters high viewing platform. Thanks to the almost unobstructed view of the airport grounds, breathtaking photos are still possible. For skaters and cyclists, the site will continue to be easily accessible via the road along the offset airport fence. After completion of the aircraft stands until probably October 2017 are again provided in the fence peepholes for the spotter. The viewing platform will be officially open to the public from 28 April 2017.
Move to Switzerland with dogs @ Zürich airport
We heard Valentina's bark as we aproached the bagage claim. Zuly sprinted towards her, and I managed to capture the last few seconds of the first encounter after 11 hours of travel.
Limmatschiff Regula, Zürich Bürkliplatz to Landesmuseum, Switzerland
Sightseeing auf dem Wasser – mit dem Limmatschiff durch die Zürcher Altstadt. Mit dem Limmatboot treibt man gemütlich an den schönsten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Zürcher Altstadt vorbei, bis sich der Blick auf den Zürichsee öffnet.
Vorbei an Zunfthäusern, dem Zürcher Rathaus sowie Lindenhof und Grossmünster: Eine Rundfahrt mit dem Limmatboot führt vom Landesmuseum die Limmat hinauf bis auf den Zürichsee und zurück. Die Motorboote «Felix» und «Regula» sind nach den Zürcher Stadtheiligen benannt und die «Turicum» trägt den römischen Namen der Stadt. Sie alle verfügen über verglaste Dächer, sodass die Insassen auf allen Plätzen die Aussicht auf die malerische Altstadt und den Zürichsee geniessen können.
Die Limmatboote fahren von April bis Oktober täglich. Die Strecke vom Landesmuseum bis zum Zürichhorn dauert ca. 25 Minuten, die ganze Rundfahrt etwa 50 Minuten. Die Boote sind nicht rollstuhlgängig.
Wenn Sie eine ZürichCARD oder einen gültigen Fahrausweis für die Zone 110 des ZVV besitzen, ist die Fahrt mit dem Limmatschiff inklusive. Betriebszeiten: 3. April bis 18. Oktober 2015.

Sightseeing on the Water – on a Limmat River Cruise Through Zurich’s Old Town
Past the historical guild houses, Zurich’s Town Hall, the Lindenhof and the Grossmünster church: a Limmat River Cruise takes you from the National Museum up the River Limmat to Lake Zurich and back again. The motorized boats, “Felix” and “Regula”, are named for Zurich’s patron saints, while “Turicum” bears the city's ancient Roman name. All of them have glass roofs, so that passengers can enjoy the beautiful views of the picturesque Old Town and Lake Zurich from wherever they are sitting.The Limmat River Cruises operate between April and October. The stretch between the National Museum and the Zürichhorn takes approximately 25 minutes, while the entire round trip lasts around 50 minutes. The boats are not suitable for wheelchairs.If you are in possession of a ZürichCARD or a valid ZVV ticket for Zone 110, the Limmat River Cruise is included.

Visit to Zürich, Switzerland, Friday 24 July 1998 Part 1
My visit to Zürich in July 1998. This is a slideshow of photos I took on Friday 24th July 1998 in Zürich and surrounding areas of northern Switzerland. There is a small supplement of photos taken Saturday 25th July 1998 in Chiasso, Switzerland, in the Canton of Ticino close to the Italian border.
Note, at the time, I was working in Munich, and had a day off. I took the 08.10 Angelika Kaufmann from Munich to Zürich for only DM 89,00 one way in First Class (quite a bargain even in 1998!), today about € 45,00. It made stops in Buchloe, Memmingen, Lindau, Bregenz (Vorarlberg, Austria), St. Margarethen (Switzerland), St. Gallen, Winterthur, Zürich Airport, and Zürich Central Station.

My Samsung Powershot 115 camera stopped taking photos on that Friday evening and would not make any photos unless the zoom was set to 115 mm, and the fixed-focus feature was enabled. On Saturday 25th July I bought a replacement camera in Milan, Italy, but did not know how to use it properly until Friday 31st July when I was headed to Vienna from Munich. Therefore I have no photos of Milan, Verona, Bolzano, or Innsbruck from that time. Darn, those Keglevich ads in Milan, when people's heads were made into the Keglevich bottle, were soooooooo funny!!!!!!
Also the Solero icecream ads with the bald man eating the Apricot-flavoured ice cream was funny because it looked like there were about twenty-odd clones, also eating the Solero ice. Oh well.......
I did return to Zürich on 8th August 1998 for the Street Parade, spent the night in Rümlang, Canton Zürich, and returned to Munich on Sunday 9th August 1998. That can be made into a different slideshow.

Geneva: “City of Peace”, City of Water
Known as the “city of peace”, Geneva, as my short film shows, is also a city dominated by water. Switzerland’s second largest city is located at the south west end of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône flows out of the lake, the largest on the course of that great river, and one of the largest lakes in western Europe. Just west of the city centre a second river, the Arve, flows into the Rhône. The “Jet d’Eau” in the middle of the lake is one of the landmarks of Geneva and is among the tallest fountains in the world. Being built on so much water, the city requires a lot of bridges, and my film features some of them. The video was taken in summer – don’t miss the tourist street train and the birdsong heard above the noise of the traffic – when the lakeside is particularly beautiful and busy.
