Sabratha (Libya) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Around seventy kilometres west of the Libyan capital of Tripoli are the remnants of an ancient city that has been in ruins since ancient times. As with Oea and Leptis Magna, Sabratha was one of the last large trading cities of the former Tripolitania.A re-constructed theatre that could accommodate an audience of five thousand is the ancient city’s most impressive building and dates back to the second century B.C. It was built by the Romans whose cultural influence on Sabratha lasted for several centuries. Several baths, among them the Thermal Salt Water Baths on the coast, give an insight into the high living standards of the city’s former inhabitants and trade with the farmers of the surrounding region helped to make life in the town extremely pleasant. In the seventh century A.D. the city was conquered by the Arabs. However, they selected another Tripolitanian metropolis as their capital city. Thus the once-glorious Sabratha fell into decay and lay forgotten for several centuries.

Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. It was originally built by the Romans who came here after the Phoenicians and gave the city a completely new appearance. It could accommodate up to five thousand onlookers. Just like the country’s former explorers we venture further and further into the desert and spend the night in Kirkiba Camp in circular straw huts at the foot of huge sand dunes. Next day we visit Garma, now in ruins, but whioch around two thousand years ago was the capital of the Garamantes Realm. From the Sahara we travel to the country’s eastern Mediterranean coast and to ancient Cyrenaika, the largest city in today’s Benghazi. Of the historic city of the Pentapolis, the Greek five-city alliance, nothing remains today as it is now covered by modern city buildings. Magnificent history, untouched coastlines and endless desert landscapes with oasis settlements, salt lakes, rock paintings and Berber towns: Libya, a little known land in amazing North Africa.

Tripolitania: at first sight there are few traces of this ancient and legendary place in northwest Libya but it once had three great cities, Sabratha, Leptis Magna And Oea, Tripoli, once named Oea, dates back to the 7th century B.C. when Tripoli was an important trading centre for the Carthaginians. As much as anything else it is the local plants, majestic palm trees and impressive cacti that give Tripoli its Mediterranean atmosphere. Clearly, the influence of the sea is only present close to the coast as a few kilometres inland is endless desert. An eye-catching landmark that dates back to the time of the corsairs is the Citadel in Tripoli’s harbour. The Arabs enlarged the original Byzantine complex to a fortress and for a short spell the city fell into the hands of the Spanish. Sabratha is the youngest of the three great cities of Tripolitania. Thanks to much restoration work the Theatre is one of the most impressive architectural monuments of this once legendary trading city. The restored façade of the Roman stage building is one of the most beautiful to be seen anywhere. Columns of green-white Cipollino Marble with artistic capitols underline the extraordinary architectural charm of Sabratha’s ancient theatre. Around a hundred and twenty kilometres east of Tripoli is Tripolitania’s third ancient metropolis of Leptis Magna, a unique excavation site. The oldest finds in Leptis Magna were made in a Punic cemetery that had been built on by the Romans. Under the rule of Carthage, Leptis Magna became an important trading metropolis until it fell into the hands of the Numidians. The remains of the legendary Tripolitania of antiquity continue to inspire even today and are proof of a great and golden epoch.

Come with us as we take you to see four of the best Roman Ruins in Serbia. Serbia was under Roman rule for about 600 years, from the 1st century BC until the Slavs invaded in the 6th century. Serbia was the birth place of 17 Roman Emperors, including Constantine the Great who was the first Christian Emperor of the Roman Empire.
The first stop is ancient Sirmium in the modern day Serbian town of Sremska Mitrovica. Sirmium is a fascinating Roman imperial complex that dates back to the 1st century AD. We visit the archaeological museum for a tour of Roman artifacts: tombstones, sarcophagus, sculptures, columns, and coins.
Then we visited the 5th century Christian Basilica dedicated to St. Demetrius. Sirmium actually had one of the highest concentrations of Christian Basilicas, especially since Christianity was rapidly growing through the region in the first half of the 4th century. The first Christian Emperor Constantine spent more time during his reign in Sirmium than in any other city in the Balkans.
And lastly we visit the Imperial complex, which is preserved within a building in the center of town for all to see. What we see today are some of the original mosaics, bath system, and palace walls. Sirmium is an easy daytrip from Belgrade, it’s just a one-hour drive east on the road to Croatia.
Next up we head east of Belgrade to the Roman military base of Viminacium. It’s a fascinating archaeological park situated where the River Mlava empties into the Danube. Lubomir, an archaeologist who has worked to uncover several of the sites here takes us for a tour.
This ancient Roman military fort served at the base for the Seventh Legion Claudia in the fourth century, but it was in use well before that time since the 1st century. We walk around one of the covered excavation sites to see the ruins of ancient roads, public bath system, tiles, and human remains in the necropolis.
Viminacium is a great day trip from Belgrade especially for history lovers. The site also features a reconstructed amphitheater and beautiful visitors center, modeled after an ancient Roman villa rustica. There is also a hotel and restaurant onsite.
We now head southeast to Felix Romuliana in the town of Gamzigrad, Serbia. We take a quick tour of and visit some of the highlights of this amazing archaeological park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. He built it to commemorate his retirement from the throne and named it after his mother Romula. It is a sprawling compound spread across 10 acres.
The columns of the Imperial Palace are not completely original, but they were erected to give visitors an idea about how the atrium once looked. It holds an impressive collection of mosaics, statues including a bust of Emperor Galerius, Roman coins, and aerial photography of the site.
Lastly, we drive south close to the border of Kosovo to visit Justiniana Prima, or Empress’ Town near the town of Leskovac. Our guide Nebojsa takes us for a tour of the Byzantine ruins of Justiniana Prima.
Justiniana Prima was an early Christian city founded by Emperor Justinian I. It served as the seat of the Archbishop from 535 to 615. The site contains what is left of an enormous basilica, the acropolis, lower town, and upper town. Justiniana Prima served as the administrative and spiritual center of Illyricum, a Roman province that encompassed the central Balkan Peninsula.
We see portions of unearthed mosaics and the remains of the public bath complex, which was heated by an innovative method known as the hypocaust system in which the heat from an oven was used to heat the floors from underneath, sort of like ancient sub-floor heating. Justiniana Prima is a beautiful site that badly needs to be maintained. While the Serbian government sorts that out, you will need a guide to show you around the different areas so you know what you’re looking at.

Libya's strategic, geographical position and profound history make it a vital link between the eastern and western parts of the Arab world, and between Europe and Africa. The country has known its ups and downs, but the historical monuments are a testimony of the great Libyan civilization of old. Look at the engravings of the AKAKUS mountains, the drawings in the MATCHANDOUSH caves.
The cities of JARMA, ZAKAKRA, and SABHA' in the south, and the historical city of GHIRZA in the centre. Libya has played host to many civilizations, and has enriched civilization in its turn, with writings, drawings and engravings in the caves of TADRART mountains, and archaeological treasures from ATAFT. The Phoenician, Roman, and Byzantine ports of TRIPOLI, SABRATAH, LIBDAH, SHAH'HAT, SUSAH, TUKRAH, and TALMITHA. The old Islamic cities such as SIRT, DARNAH, and AJDABIYA, and other cities in the heart of the desert, including GHADAMES, ZUWAYLAH, JALU, OJLA, GHAT, and FEZZAN. Not forgetting the places and fortresses of GHARYAN, MIZDAH, AL-QARYAT, YIFRAN, JADU, NALUT, MISALLATAH, and AWINAT. The first site most tourists visit is TRIPOLI, Libya's biggest city, the queen of the seas.
It is an historical site. the city of Islamic civilization, Arab art and handicraft, where every monument tells a story. TRIPOLI has changed little since its foundation in the first millennium BC: it is still a lush garden filled with olive trees, palms, grapevines, and orange groves. The city has a wealth of old and new monuments. Travel east or west, to nearby LIBDAH or SABRATAH, and soak up all the history.
Shopping is a great pleasure, especially in the popular markets where you can buy a great variety of Libyan handicrafts such as traditional clothes, carpets, handmade gold and silver jewellery, copper and silver dishes, leather goods, and pottery. Every kind of aquatic sport is practised in the resorts along the coast, where you will also find the port of BENGHAZI, which combines magnificent buildings with large, open spaces.
In nearby SULUQ stands the mausoleum of OMAR MOKHTAR, hero of the Libyan Resistance during the Italian occupation. Take the highway east to the magnificent cities of the Green Mountain: DARNAH with its falls and splendid coast; AL BAYDA', a quiet city high up in the mountains; ancient SHAH'HAT (Cyrene) and beautiful SUSAH (Apollonia), TULMAYTHAH, TUKRAH, RA'S AL HILAL.... Libya offers you two thousand kilometers of splendid beaches, and some beautiful small cities each with its typical architecture and special characteristics, like AUWARAH, TUBRUQ, MISRATAH, AZ ZAWIYAH, AL-KHUMS, and ZLITAN. Explore Libya's desert in WADI ASH SHATI, the plain of AWAYNAT, BRAK, MURZUQ, and the oasis of AL KUFRAH, ZALLAH and BAZIMAH. Then cool off in AL BAYDA' or near AL MARJ, or on the plain of DARNAH.
As you go further and further into the desert, all you meet are waves and waves, the great sand sea, but then there are the refreshing oasis. The history, the monuments and tales told by the locals make this place unique. It is a feast for the senses.. The jewel of the desert is GHADAMES, a mélange of natural beauty, important monuments and a distinctive architectural style for which it is famous. Libya may be the land of ancient civilizations, but it also looks to the future. It is a country of peace. Libya, a land touched by history.
