Saint-Thégonnec is a former commune in the Finistère department in Brittany in northwestern France. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune Saint-Thégonnec Loc-Eguiner.The village is noted for its very elaborate parish close, one of a number in the area, which include Guimiliau and Lampaul-Guimiliau.

The Pointe du Raz is a promontory that extends into the Atlantic from western Brittany, in France. The local Breton name is Beg ar Raz. It is the western point of the commune of Plogoff, Finistère. It is named after the Raz de Sein, the dangerous stretch of water between it and the island of Sein . It is a dramatic place of crashing waves and strong winds. The word raz was borrowed from Norman by the Bretons and shares the same etymology as the English word race, strong current of water; both are from Old Norse rás. The Saint-Thégonnec Parish close is located at Saint-Thégonnec in the arrondissement of Morlaix in Brittany in north-western France. The enclos paroissial comprises the parish church of Notre-Dame, a triumphal arch and enclosure wall, an ossuary and the famous calvary . It is a listed historical monument. There is a second calvary set into the enclosure wall and the war memorial dedicated to those lost in the 1914-1918 war is also set into another section of the wall.On 8 June 1998, a fire destroyed a part of the north aisle and an extensive programme of restoration was finished in 2005. The Gothic bell-tower and Renaissance tower dates from 1563 and was finished in 1626. Saint-Thégonnec Parish Close Ossuary, Brittany France

The Breton region of Finistere is known for its enclose paroissials - or Parish Closes. The Parish Close is an area enclosed by a wall that surrounds a church and other architectural elements that could include a monumental gateway, porch sanctuary, ossuary (place where bones are stored and revered), relic chapel, fountain, and a high cross known in Brittany as a Calvary.

The Parish Close is a repository of some of the most exquisite religious art in Europe. I visited several of these under the guidance of Brittany expert and author, Wendy Mews in 2016.

The ossuary at Saint-Thégonnec is named for Notre Dame after the Virgin Mary. The ossuary is a separate building within the Parish Close and serves as a crypt for notables. One end of the building is completely occupied by a collection of eleven lifesized figures carved out of oak by Jacques Lespagnol in 1702. Ten figures are gathered around the figure of the dead Jesus Christ. Each figure has a unique expression showing their grief at the death including three angels.

Journey's End - Stations with no trains - Scrignac and Kermeur, Brittany

For years the lifeline for local people, this Breton Railway line is now a distant memory. Nature has taken over, birds nest in the buildings, butterflies flit between wild flowers on the embankments, and cyclists and ramblers have replaced the sound of locomotives and carriages where the track bed used to be. The track bed is wheelchair accessible and runs for many kilometres betwixt Morlaix and Carhaix. The soundtrack is from a UK steam train recording on YouTube - so not a French locomotive.
