HELISKI MONTE ROSA | Col Du Lys to Zermatt | DJI Osmo pocket & Mavic Pro

Amazing views on our descent down the Grenz and Gorner glaciers. The heli picked us up from the Italian side and dropped us at the Col du Lys 4255m (14,000ft) between Lyscamm and the Monte Rosa. From there we descended down the Grenzgletscher and Gornergletscher and arrived in Zermatt Switzerland. We then took up the Klein Matterhorn cablecar and skied off piste all the way back to Champoluc, Italy where we were staying. Overall amazing day with insane scenery despite not great snow conditions. Shot with the DJI osmo pocket, GoPro hero 4, and DJI Mavic pro.

Hypatia and Alexandria
Documentary on Hypatia and the city of Alexandria. The program shows footage of Amenabar's last film Agora proving the historical accuracy of the movie.

Hypatia was the daughter of Theon of Alexandria who was a teacher of mathematics with the Museum of Alexandria in Egypt. A center of Greek intellectual and cultural life, the Museum included many independent schools and the great library of Alexandria.
Hypatia studied with her father, and with many others including Plutarch the Younger. She herself taught at the Neoplatonist school of philosophy. She became the salaried director of this school in 400. She probably wrote on mathematics, astronomy and philosophy, including about the motions of the planets, about number theory and about conic sections.

Hypatia corresponded with and hosted scholars from others cities. Synesius, Bishop of Ptolemais, was one of her correspondents and he visited her frequently. Hypatia was a popular lecturer, drawing students from many parts of the empire.

From the little historical information about Hypatia that survives, it appears that she invented the plane astrolabe, the graduated brass hydrometer and the hydroscope, with Synesius of Greece, who was her student and later colleague.

Hypatia dressed in the clothing of a scholar or teacher, rather than in women's clothing. She moved about freely, driving her own chariot, contrary to the norm for women's public behavior. She exerted considerable political influence in the city.

Orestes, the governor of Alexandria, like Hypatia, was a pagan (non-Christian). Orestes was an adversary of the new Christian bishop, Cyril, a future saint. Orestes, according to the contemporary accounts, objected to Cyril expelling the Jews from the city, and was murdered by Christian monks for his opposition.

Cyril probably objected to Hypatia on a number of counts: She represented heretical teachings, including experimental science and pagan religion. She was an associate of Orestes. And she was a woman who didn't know her place. Cyril's preaching against Hypatia is said to have been what incited a mob led by fanatical Christian monks in 415 to attack Hypatia as she drove her chariot through Alexandria. They dragged her from her chariot and, according to accounts from that time, stripped her, killed her, stripped her flesh from her bones, scattered her body parts through the streets, and burned some remaining parts of her body in the library of Caesareum.

Hypatia's students fled to Athens, where the study of mathematics flourished after that. The Neoplatonic school she headed continued in Alexandria until the Arabs invaded in 642.

When the library of Alexandria was burned by the Arab conquerors, used as fuel for baths, the works of Hypatia were destroyed. We know her writings today through the works of others who quoted her -- even if unfavorably -- and a few letters written to her by contemporaries.

COZZO SCAVO Santa Caterina Villarmosa

A due chilometri circa dal centro abitato di Santa Caterina Villarmosa sorge il colle detto Cozzo dello Scavo, sulle cui pendici, recenti scavi, hanno permesso di ritrovare diversi oggetti d’interesse archeologico, come vasetti d’argilla, lucerne, monete e molto altro ancora.
Secondo la leggenda un signore di Santa Caterina, una notte, sognò che dentro le viscere del Cozzo Scavo, vi erano nascoste sette vasche piene di monete d’oro.
Svegliatosi nel cuore della notte, si recò subito da un prete che possedeva le candele delle tenebre e un libro del 1500 dove era scritta la formula magica per liberare il tesoro. Dopo avere preso in prestito tre muli per caricare il tesoro, il signore e il prete si avviarono verso il colle.
Appena giunti, il prete accese le candele, aprì il libro e cominciò a leggere; aveva appena letto due righe che il colle si aprì, mostrando dentro una caverna con le sette vasche d’oro. Il signore si diede a riempire i sacchi che caricò in tutta fretta sui muli che erano rimasti fuori.
Nel momento in cui il carico fu fatto, l’uomo tornò indietro per l’ultima volta per riempirsi anche le tasche; ma questa sua ingordigia gli fu fatale, perché mentre era intento a raccogliere le ultime monete rimaste nelle vasche, un colpo di vento spense le candele e fece chiudere il libro. Il colle Cozzo Scavo si richiuse immediatamente imprigionando il povero disgraziato.
Il prete, che era rimasto fuori a guardia dei muli carichi del tesoro, vedendo che il suo compagno non poteva tornare più indietro, se ne tornò in paese con il tesoro tutto per se.
Nel dicembre del 1993 la Soprintendenza ai BB.CC.AA. di Caltanissetta, in collaborazione con l’Università di Bologna, nell’ambito di una ricerca sulle tracce di cultura fenicio-punica in Sicilia, ha compiuto una prima indagine sul sito di Cozzo Scavo.
Gli scavi hanno interessato il versante orientale dell’altura, dove già in passato, una serie di interventi clandestini aveva parzialmente messo in luce tratti di mura riferibili a probabili edifici. Durante le operazioni di scavo è stato possibile recuperare reperti di vario genere: pithoi, macine in pietra lavica, lastre pavimentali in pietra lavica, pesi fittili “da telaio”, anfore commerciali, ecc.
Successivamente l’indagine è stata estesa anche alla parte ovest, dove sono stati individuati altri due ambienti. Durante i lavori sono state rinvenute alcune monete, grazie alle quali è possibile datare l’edificio fra la fine del V secolo e la seconda metà del IV secolo a. C., in accordo con il materiale ceramico presente.
Inoltre, di particolare rilievo, è stato il ritrovamento di un anello bronzeo di produzione punica, sul quale era riprodotto un cavallo al galoppo.
Grazie ad alcuni finanziamenti dell’Unione Europea è stato possibile realizzare il progetto per la valorizzazione turistica del sito archeologico, attraverso la sistemazione della viabilità e del sistema dei servizi dell’area.

Lazio (pronounced [ˈlatt͡sjo], Latin: Latium), sometimes referred to in English as Latium, is one of the 20 administrative regions of Italy, situated in the central peninsular section of the country. Lazio comprises a land area of 17,236 km2 (6,655 sq mi) and it has borders with Tuscany, Umbria, and Marche to the north, Abruzzo and Molise to the east, Campania to the south, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. The region is mainly flat and hilly, with small mountainous areas in the most eastern and southern districts.

The coast of Lazio is mainly composed of sandy beaches, punctuated by the headlands of Circeo (541 m) and Gaeta (171 m). The Pontine Islands, which are part of Lazio, lie opposite the southern coast. Behind the coastal strip, to the north, lies the Maremma Laziale (the continuation of Tuscan Maremma), a costal plain interrupted at Civitavecchia by the Tolfa Mountains (616 m). The central section of the region is occupied by the Roman Campagna, a vast alluvial plain surrounding the city of Rome, with an area of approximately 2,100 km2 (811 sq mi). The southern districts are characterized by the flatlands of Agro Pontino, a once swampy and malarial area, that was reclaimed over the centuries.

The Preapennines of Latium, marked by the Tiber valley and the Liri with the Sacco tributary, include on the right of the Tiber, three groups of mountains of volcanic origin: the Volsini, Cimini and Sabatini, whose largest former craters are occupied by the Bolsena, Vico and Bracciano lakes. To the south of the Tiber, other mountain groups form part of the Preapennines: the Alban Hills, also of volcanic origin, and the calcareous Lepini, Ausoni and Aurunci Mountains. The Apennines of Latium are a continuation of the Apennines of Abruzzo: the Reatini Mountains with Terminillo (2,213 m), Mounts Sabini, Prenestini, Simbruini and Ernici which continue east of the Liri into the Mainarde Mountains.
