Haarlem se trouve à une vingtaine de kilomètres à l'ouest d'Amsterdam et à 6 km environ de la mer du Nord. Au cœur de la cité, la rivière Spaarne qui la traverse, est bordée de monuments historiques. Haarlem est d'ailleurs surnommée Spaarnestad.
Haarlem est entourée d'eau et plusieurs ports de plaisance dans les environs accueillent voiliers, planches à voile et bateaux à moteur.
Haarlem qui fut fondé au ixe siècle sur les bords d'un cordon littoral d'un lac appelé Haarlemmermeer, est doté d'un riche passé et a obtenu les franchises communales depuis plus de sept cent cinquante ans. Les brasseries, la construction navale et l'industrie textile ont fait autrefois de Haarlem l'une des villes les plus prospères des Pays-Bas.
Quelques grandes dates de l'histoire haarlemoise :
-le rôle du comte Guillaume Ier de Hollande dans la conquête de Damiette (Égypte) en 1218 durant la cinquième croisade,
-l'invention de l'imprimerie par Laurens Janszoon Coster (vers 1430),
( On doit seul à Johannes Gutenberg, l'invention des caractères métalliques mobiles).
-la conduite valeureuse devenue proverbiale d'une femme, Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaar, lors du siège par les Espagnols (1572).
Toutes ces histoires font part de l'histoire mythique de Haarlem.
Le fameux peintre Frans Hals (1581-1666) y passa toute sa carrière. De nombreux Flamands s'établirent à Haarlem vers 1700.

Harlem, Manhattan
En 1658, le hollandais Pieter Stuyvesant a fondé le campement de Nieuw Haarlem (La nouvelle Haarlem) sur l'île de Manhattan en Amérique du nord. Ce campement est devenu plus tard le quartier de Harlem dans la ville de New York.

Eating in the Medieval times - at Stadsherberg de Mol restaurant in Delft, The Netherlands. Eat by candle light, as they did in ancient Delft, back in the medieval time period. It was fun, especially for my dad, he loved it. Eating with your hands is fun at first, till you realize you have nothing to wipe them with! Interesting history about the old building from the 1400's as well, all to hear in this video. --- Stadsherberg de Mol Delft: The building in which Stadsherberg de Mol is located has eben build in the Year of our Lord 1563 . De outer walls opn the ground floor level are approx half a meter thick. The structure of the building has been completely made of thick wooden columns. Klompen Dancers At Panorama At The Dutch Canadian Society 4.mpg
Through the 1980's and early 1990's a great ethnic festival called Panorama took place in London, Ontario, Canada in September. Most of the ethnic clubs in town opened their doors to visitors and a week of celebration of Canadian diversity brought the entire community together. One of the highlight pavilions was the Dutch Canadian Society which catered to a standing up only crowd during the entire weekend. The Dykehopper band entertained as did the many folk dancers both young and old. Often the neighbouring Marconi Club dancers would drop in to entertain and the Dutch Klompen Dancers returned the favour by visiting the Marconi Club down the road. Ethnic foods joined the entertainment throughout the weekend while visitors had their weekend passports stamped as they traveled the world without leaving London. The Dutch Canadian Society is always looking for new members. We welcome members from ALL Nationalities. If you live in or around London, Ontario, Canada please consider becoming a member. Being Dutch or being of Dutch Heritage is not at all necessary. Many of our members are not Dutch. They enjoy being part of many activities and socials. To be a member costs only $40 per year with a one time only $10 administration fee. This gives you many privileges, first choice of tickets to events, special hall rental rates, a vote at club meetings etc.
