Camping Mühlleiten, Schönau am Königssee, Germany
The campsite is located around 5km south of Berchtesgaden and within easy walking distance of Königssee and the Berchtesgaden National Park. The campsite is integrated into the environment and is surrounded by mountains. It is based around a guest house (as can be seen in the photos) and offers a large number of permanent and temporary spaces, all with EHU, a sanitary block (being upgraded as this article is being written), outdoor black waste disposal, grey water disposal and fresh water.
What above all this campsite has to offer is Berchtesgaden and the natural beauty around it. As a WW2 historian, I am aware that people will come to my site and follow me because of this so I will start off with the Obersalzberg, the location which became the surrogate capital of the Third Reich for at least two months every year from 1933 - 1945. Although little remains of it today, there is a large documentation centre and exhibition which shows how this came about and the history of the Third Reich. On the Kehlstein peak and visible for kilometres around, is the Eagle's Nest, a tea house built for Hitler but which he visited only 12 times which is now available for visits during the summer. Other than that Berchtesgaden is a picture postcard German Alpine town - the sort that one imagines. It has a royal castle used by the kings of Bavaria when they were not in Munich, a salt mine which has been in business since 1517 and which one can visit on a fascinating guided tour and old churches.
Berchtesgaden also has the third highest mountain in Germany - the highest one which is uniquely in Germany. The Haus der Berge in Berchtesgaden offers a fascinating insight into the mountains describing the flora and fauna to be found there. From the campsite one can walk into the National Park and walk along well laid out trails. For the cyclist this will be a challenge due to the gradients! Also with the park we find the Königssee, a glacial lake only 10,000 years old and which has a depth of 170 metres. One can take the pleasant electric boat and then on foot visit Obersee - a mysterious round glacial lake surrounded by Alpine pasture, forest and mountains.

Situated within the Berchtesgaden Alps in the municipality of Schönau am Königsee, just south of Berchtesgaden and the Austrian city of Salzburg, the Königssee is Germany's third deepest lake. Located at a Jurassic rift, it was formed by glaciers during the last ice age. It stretches about 7.7 km (4.8 mi) in the north-south direction and is about 1.7 km (1.1 mi) across at its widest point. Except at its outlet, the Königsseer Ache at the village of Königssee, the lake similar to a fjord is surrounded by steeply rising flanks of mountains up to 2,700 m (8,900 ft), including the Watzmann massif in the west. The railway Königsseebahn served the lake from 1909 until 1965. Its last tracks were dismantled during 1971, and the station in Berchtesgaden was demolished in 2012. The only remaining element of the railway is the Königsee station (now a restaurant). The track route is mostly used as a walking path.
The literal translation of the name, Königssee, appears to be king's lake; however while German: König does indeed mean king, there had been no Bavarian kings since the days of Louis the German until Elector Maximilian I Joseph assumed the royal title in 1806. Therefore, the name more probably stems from the first name Kuno of local nobles, who appear in several historical sources referring to the donation of the Berchtesgaden Provostry in the twelfth century; the lake was formerly called Kunigsee
In 1944 a sub-camp of the Dachau concentration camp was located nearby where Heinrich Himmler had a residence built at Schönau for his mistress Hedwig Potthast, More Info:
