London, the biggest city in the UK, is also one of the world's major economic, financial, and cultural centres. It is also a major tourist destination, attracting thousands who mostly come for the attractions of Central London. The outlying suburbs are mostly residential and industrial.
One of Central London's landmark neighbourhoods is Chinatown, which is located just south of the Soho neighbourhood in the City of Westminster. Chinatown is home to Chinese restaurants and other businesses around Gerrard Street. London has a relatively small Chinese population (about 1.5% of the population) compared with some other Western English-speaking cities such as San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney, or New York City. This may be why London's Chinatown is relatively small.
According to wikipedia, London's original Chinatown was located in the Limehouse area of London's East End. But this slum area was badly damaged by German bombing during the Blitz in World War II. In the 1970s, newly arrived immigrants from Hong Kong established a new Chinatown in what was originally a run-down part of the Soho neighbourhood near Shaftesbury Avenue and Gerrard Street. This is the modern-day London Chinatown.
