Spitsbergen is the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway. Constituting the westernmost bulk of the archipelago, it borders the Arctic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, and the Greenland Sea. Spitsbergen covers an area of 37,673 km2 , making it the largest island in Norway and the 36th-largest in the world. The administrative centre is Longyearbyen. Other settlements, in addition to research outposts, are the Russian mining community of Barentsburg, the research community of Ny-Ålesund, and the mining outpost of Sveagruva.   • 1. Svalbard Kirke Longyearbyen
    Svalbard Church is located at Longyearbyen in Svalbard, Norway. It was the northernmost church in the world, before the St. Nicolas church was built in Nagurskoye, Russia. The first church at Longyearbyen was consecrated on August 28, 1921. During World War II, it was bombed, and the church burned down. In 1956, the foundation stone for the new church was laid down. The architect was Hans Magnus. The church was consecrated on August 24, 1958. The church is built of wood, is of rectangular plan, and has 140 seats. The original altar candlesticks in silver together with the baptismal bowl, which was a gift from King Haakon VII and Queen Maud, are currently in place in the new Svalbard church.The church is part of the Church of Norway.
