The Pilgrimage Church of Wies (German: Wieskirche) is an oval rococo church, designed in the late 1740s by brothers J. B and Dominikus Zimmermann, the latter of whom lived nearby for the last eleven years of his life.
It is located in the foothills of the Alps, in the municipality of Steingaden in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany.
It is said that, in 1738, tears were seen on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour.
This miracle resulted in a pilgrimage rush to see the sculpture.
In 1740, a small chapel was built to house the statue but it was soon realized that the building would be too small for the number of pilgrims it attracted, and so Steingaden Abbey decided to commission a separate shrine.
Many who have prayed in front of the statue of Jesus on the altar have claimed that people have been miraculously cured of their diseases, which has made this church even more of a pilgrimage site.
Construction took place between 1745 and 1754, and the interior was decorated with frescoes and with stuccowork in the tradition of the Wessobrunner School.
Everything was done throughout the church to make the supernatural visible.
Sculpture and murals combined to unleash the divine in visible form.
There is a popular belief that the Bavarian government planned to sell or demolish the rococo masterpiece during the secularization of Bavaria at the beginning of the 19th century, and that only protests from the local farmers saved it from destruction.
Available sources, however, document that the responsible state commission clearly advocated the continuation of Wies as a pilgrimage site, even in spite of economic objections from the abbot of Steingaden.
The Wieskirche was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and underwent extensive restoration between 1985 and 1991.

It is not only the Linderhof castle, but the whole of its park and its picturesque buildings which are worth the detour. This refuge of King Louis II of Bavaria, situated in a valley close to the Austrian border, was the only one to be completed during his lifetime and is also one of his favorite places of stay. In this region, another site worth visiting is the Wies Church, one of the most beautiful rococo churches in the world.
Linderhof Palace (German: Schloss Linderhof) is a Schloss in Germany, in southwest Bavaria near Ettal Abbey. It is the smallest of the three palaces built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the only one which he lived to see completed.
Development of the building

Ludwig already knew the area around Linderhof from his youth when he had accompanied his father King Maximilian II of Bavaria on his hunting trips in the Bavarian Alps. When Ludwig II became King in 1864 he inherited the so-called Königshäuschen from his father, and in 1869 began enlarging the building. In 1874 he decided to tear down the Königshäuschen and rebuild it on its present-day location in the park. At the same time three new rooms and the staircase were added to the remaining U-shaped complex, and the previous wooden exterior was clad with stone façades. The building was designed in the style of the second rococo-period. Between 1863 and 1886 a total of 8,460,937 marks was spent constructing Linderhof.
Symbolic background

Although Linderhof is much smaller than Versailles, it is evident that the palace of the French Sun-King Louis XIV (who was an idol for Ludwig) was its inspiration. The staircase, for example, is a reduction of the famous Ambassador's staircase in Versailles, which would be copied in full in Herrenchiemsee. Stylistically, however, the building and its decor take their cues from the mid-18th century Rococo of Louis XV, and the small palace in the Graswang was more directly based on that king's Petit Trianon on the Versailles grounds. The symbol of the sun that can be found everywhere in the decoration of the rooms represents the French notion of absolutism that, for Ludwig, was the perfect incorporation of his ideal of a God-given monarchy with total royal power. Such a monarchy could no longer be realised in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century. The bedroom was important to the ceremonial life of an absolute monarch; Louis XIV of France used to give his first (lever) and last audience (coucher) of the day in his bedchamber. In imitation of Versailles, the bedroom is the largest chamber of Linderhof Palace. By facing north, however, the Linderhof bedroom inverts the symbolism of its Versailles counterpart, showing Ludwig's self-image as a Night-King.
The location of the palace near Ettal Abbey again presents another interesting point. Because of its architecture Ludwig saw the church of the monastery as the room where the holy grail was preserved. This fact connects the idea of a baroque palace to the one of a medieval castle such as Neuschwanstein and reminds of the operas of Richard Wagner whose patron Ludwig was.

Our tour today takes us to Wildsteig, it is in the foothills of the alps. Nothing else is mentioned to stop in to have a look at. On another brochure I had read it is the Nordic Walking Centre. We stop to find the tourist information office, which is, brochures on shelves in the hallway. No one to talk to about this at all, I was very disappointed. We have seen lots of people out with the walking sticks and I thought it would have been great to learn how to do this, in such beautiful surroundings.
Our next town is Steingaden. This is the town with the Welfenmünster Church. We stop in at the Tourist Info office and she points us in the right direction, but, we can't go in right now as there is a funeral in process. We pick up a couple of other brochures and walk towards the church. We stop in at the bakery and buy a banana cake, it is a cake with ½ a banana on it and then covered with chocolate. Len likes it, so he got to eat most of it.
We go to the Cloister gardens and look at the flowers, herbs and Len does a walking maze. A family came along and they tried it, while I spoke with the Mom. They were very interested in where we were from and loved our story on what we have been doing.
We then go back to the church, the funeral is over and all have left. We go to enter the church and find ourselves in the middle of a German tour group. We listen to what the guide is talking about for a few minutes and then make our way into the Church. It is most beautiful; the paintings on the walls and ceiling are incredible as well as the rococo or stucco.
The former abbey church, the Welfenmünster, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, is a Romanesque building of the 1170s under an extravagant Rococo refurbishment carried out by Johann Georg Bergmüller throughout the whole of the 1740s.
At the entrance there were some fresco paintings on the family who built the first church and these are the oldest known surviving heraldic representation in Germany, dating from 1170 to 1200.
Our next town is Halbech, another drive through beautiful Bavarian town, nothing was written in our brochure to stop and see.. We stop in Schwangau, the town famous for the two beautiful castles built by King Ludwig II. The world renown castle of Neusschwanstein, the one Walt Disney fashioned his Cinderella Castle after. We have a look around town, stop at a little church and have our lunch on a park bench while looking up at Neuschwanstein, perched high on the hill. It was thrilling and a romantic place for lunch.
We then checked our a couple of campgrounds that were huge and filled, so we headed back down the road we had come. We passed a camping sign but couldn't remember exactly where. We found it and went along the road and came to a stop where they were fixing the road and we were suppose to follow the umlietung signs (that's German for detour). We stopped for directions and got to the town, but couldn't find the camp ground, so, we went back to the town on the main street and into information. We headed back out and we did find the camp ground. This one is not in our English book, it has 900+ spaces, a lot of permanent campers, is situated on a little lake, good for wind surfing or canoeing. It was quite pretty here and by the time we finished our super the sun was shining and it was a beautiful evening.
We played cross crib. We keep track of winners and Len said we hadn't played cards since March 31- that was 4 months ago. I guess we haven't had any free time for cards. We also found a hot chocolate mix so we had that before bed and after ...
