Paul Gabriel was born in Amsterdam. His father, a sculptor, died when he was five. The young Paul helped his mother support their large family by painting portraits. In 1840, Gabriel began following evening classes at Amsterdam’s Academy and worked for short periods with different teachers, including landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. From 1853 to 1856 he lived in the village of Oosterbeek, near Arnhem. With fellow artists such as Anton Mauve and Gerard Bilders he focused on depicting nature. Following a brief stay in Amsterdam, he lived from 1860 to 1884 in Brussels and spent the remainder of his life in Scheveningen.
In Belgium, Gabriel continued to paint typically Dutch subjects, such as polder landscapes with mills and lakes. Unlike other artists of the Hague School he used clear, vivid colours.
Gabriël painted in Kortenhoef, Abcoude, Kinderdijk, Arnhem, Oosterbeek and Scheveningen.

Gabriël, zoon van de beeldhouwer en schilder Paulus Joseph Gabriël, werd van 1840–1843 opgeleid aan de Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten te Amsterdam. Hij was een leerling van Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Cornelis Lieste, Anton Mauve, Willem Roelofsen L.P. Zocher.
Gabriël begon zijn werkzaamheden in 1853 te Haarlem. Daarna werkte hij in het Nederlandse Barbizon, Oosterbeek (Renkum) (1854–1856). Hier richtte hij zich op het landschapschilderen. Hij werkte er samen met Anton Mauve en Gerard Bilders. Verder werkte hij in Amsterdam (1856–1859), Brussel (1860–1883) en Scheveningen (Den Haag) (1884–1903).
Hij was lid van de Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij in Den Haag. Gabriël schilderde landschappen, portretten, stillevens, dieren en stadsgezichten. Hij maakte genrekunst. Gabriël signeerde 'Gabriël', 'Gabriel' of 'P.J.C. Gabriël'. Hij stond bekend onder de naam Paul Gabriël, maar werd feitelijk Constan(t) Gabriël genoemd.
