Swadlincote is a town in Derbyshire, England, near the borders with Leicestershire and Staffordshire. It lies about 5 miles south-east of Burton-upon-Trent, 5 miles north-west of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and 12.5 miles due south of Derby. It is an unparished area in the South Derbyshire district, of which it is the largest town and administrative centre. Swadlincote also covers the districts of Newhall and Midway, and the contiguous villages of Church Gresley and Woodville. Their combined population is about 36,000. Castle Gresley lies less than 2 miles to the south-west and Albert Village 1.5 miles to the south, within Leicestershire.

    Moira is a former mining village about 2.5 miles southwest of Ashby-de-la-Zouch in North West Leicestershire, England. The village is about 3 miles south of Swadlincote and forms part of the boundary with Derbyshire. The population is included in the civil parish of Ashby Woulds. For centuries North West Leicestershire has been quarried and mined for coal, limestone, granite and brick clay, and its environmental damage was one of the reasons that it was chosen as the site for the National Forest, which is part of a Government-funded programme to create more woodland. Proximate villages include Donisthorpe, Overseal, Oakthorpe and Spring Cottage.

From the 1990s, 200 square miles of north Leicestershire, south Derbyshire and southeast Staffordshire have been planted in an attempt to blend ancient woodland with newly planted areas to create a new national forest. It stretches from the western outskirts of Leicester in the east to Burton upon Trent in the west, and is planned to link the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood. In January 2018, the U.K. government unveiled plans to create a new Northern Forest stretching from Liverpool to Hull. It will shadow the path of the east-west M62 motorway.
