Japan Vlog - Hiroshima & Miyajima ・ 広島 & 宮島
April 14-15, 2016
We took the shinkansen again, this time to Hiroshima. We spent the first day exploring Hiroshima, and the second day we visited the island Miyajima (or Itsukushima)

Hiroshima:
When we arrived at Hiroshima station it was raining, so we decided to take a tour bus “meipuru~pu” (haha so cute!). The tour bus stopped right next to Hiroshima station and our hotel. And since we had JR Pass, we could ride the bus for free. Otherwise I think it was 100 or 200 yen.
Atomic Bomb Dome & Peace Memorial Museum
Although visiting these places is not particulary “fun”, I think it is something everyone should see. A very grounding experience, and a stark reminder for future generations of the horrors of war. Very moving, and very sad.
Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki 広島風お好み焼き
We decided to try some Hiroshima style okonomiyaki for dinner. In this style, the ingredients are layered rather than mixed. Since it was raining we decided to just find a place inside the station. I think it was the one called “Takasago Maru” but there were lots of other restaurants as well, so I could be mistaken. We just went for the first one that we spotted.
Hotel Granvia Hiroshima
We stayed at this very convenient hotel with direct access to Hiroshima station. We had a standard room, so it was a bit small at usual, but it had a nice big bathtub and a great view. The hotel bar was also very nice, with good drinks.

Miyajima:
The next day the sun was shining, so we decided to take a ferry to this island. While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, shrine island. Since we had the JR Pass we took the train to Miyajimaguchi and then the ferry from there, since it’s free with the JR Pass.
When we arrived, the first place we saw was an “Owls forest”, with real owls :o Though I love owls, however I don’t think it’s suitable to keep them as pets like that. And even though I love watching owls up close, I would love it more if they were free ~
Then we went on a stroll in the shopping street. A very touristy place, but filled with delicious things to eat. We tried Momiji manju, Hiroshima nikuman(ju), oysters, ice cream, fish cakes and more. Manju is a sort of steamed bun with different fillings, and Momiji Manju are distinguished by their momiji (maple) leaf shape. There was so many delicious things to try!
Itsukushima Shrine
Then walking along the beach over to Itsukushima shrine. Most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. Although, we didn’t go into the shrine, we decided to keep walking.
Daisho-in Temple (大聖院)
We instead walked to Daisho-in, located at the base of Mount Misen. It is also one of the most famous temples in Miyajima, with many beautiful buildings and statues.
Mount Misen (弥山)
From Daisho-in's temple grounds, a hiking trail leads to the summit of Mount Misen. We read that the hiking trail takes about 2 hours, and it was pretty accurate. It was quite hot that day, so I'm glad we decided to bring lots of water. Even taking the ropeway you still have to walk a bit to reach the summit. But if you can make it, the view is well worth the effort. We decided to take the ropeway down at least ~
Then we spent some time relaxing at the beach. And when evening came, the water had subsided a bit because of the tide, so we could almost walk over and touch the torii gate.

RX10 Movie 葛飾柴又を年の瀬に歩く A walk in Katsushika Shibamata at the end of year
新年を迎える前に葛飾柴又に行ってきました。
やはり正月になったら人でごった返して歩いて回るどころではないでしょう。
RX10で多分初めて撮影して回る柴又です。
男はつらいよで有名なところですが、交通機関の様子からするとほとんど郊外というよりは田舎町といった方がいいようなところでもし男はつらいよがなかったらここまで賑やかだったろうかと思うことがあります。
ここに至る鉄道のダイヤの少なさには全国的に知られた知名度の割に、しかも東京であることを考えるとかなり驚かされます。
I visited Katsushika Shibamata.
Maybe it's first time for me to shoot around this area with DSC-RX10.
I decided to go there before new year's coming.
If new year comes,this town will be terribly crowded with trippers.
One of the most favorite place for me to go,this place is full of typical scenes and views in suburbs in Tokyo.
This place is well known as the location of one of the best known Japanese movie 男はつらいよ（means like Life of men is full of hardship)and this is hometown of main character Torajiroh Kuruma(車寅次郎）played by Kiyoshi Atsumi.
If you want to understand mentality of Japanese people,to see this series of movie is one of the best way.
Maybe it is not so different from yours.
His home is a shop of Kusa-Dango(草団子)which is rice dumpling flavored and colored with a kind of edible grass like a mint and in this area many of shops of dumpling exist.
We Japanese often refer a type of herbs to grass,and this custom may sometimes make foreigners be surprised like they misunderstand that Japanese people eat grass which grows here and there.Of course,we have already known which grass is edible and good to eat and for our health like herbs in Europe and spices in India.
To go this town is really simple but not so easy because transportation is not so useful and enough.
Major way to go there is getting a train but there is only one railway line and we can get it at Takasago(高砂)station on Keisei(京成) railway line.
If you go there,you have to get a train bound for Kanamachi(金町)
there and the next station is Shibamata.
The schedule of this railway line is really different from the ones in the centre of Tokyo and a number of train is relatively few.
Shibamata is originally countryside of Tokyo rather than suburbs if it is not famous because of the movie.
If so,this town does not prosper like we see now time.
