Syvota (Greek: Σύβοτα, pronounced [ˈsivota], before 1940: Μούρτος Mourtos[2] pronounced [ˈmurtos]) is a village and a former municipality in Thesprotia, Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Igoumenitsa, of which it is a municipal unit.[3] The municipal unit has an area of 72.439 km2.[4] The population in 2011 was 875 for the village, and 2,640 for the municipal unit. The seat of the municipality was in Plataria.
History
The earliest recorded inhabitants of the region are the Thesprotians, a Greek tribe of Epirus. In antiquity, the location was called Sybota and was the site of the Battle of Sybota.
During the Middle Ages, Syvota, like the rest of Epirus, was part of the Byzantine Empire and the Despotate of Epirus. Under the Turks, it was called Mourtos.
After nearly 500 years of Ottoman rule, Syvota joined Greece in 1913, following the Balkan Wars. The coastal village of Syvota (Albanian: Murto or Vola) was home to Cham Albanians before 1944, when they were expelled for collaborating with the Axis Powers.[5]
Today, Syvota town is a well-developed resort, owing largely to the numerous pristine beaches with clear waters located on several islets immediately offshore.

A collection of beaches forms the edge of the watersports area and a shallow sand bar allows access to the sailing beach on the tiny island of Mourtemeno just opposite.

The Prefecture of Kastoria is located at the west end of Western Macedonia, bordering with the prefectures of Florina, Grevena, Kozani and Ioannina, as well as with Albania, to the west.
The city of Kastoria unfolds amphitheatrically 620 metres above sea level. It is built on a peninsula that penetrates Orestiada Lake, in the shade of the impressive mass of Grammos and Vitsi Mountains. According to the last census, the population of the Prefecture is 53.483 inhabitants, 20.636 of whom live in the city.
Kastoria is connected with Athens by air, through the Aristotle International Airport at Argos Orestikon. The Prefecture is nowadays easily accessed via Egnatia Highway. Alternatively, one can always use the old national road.

It constitutes most of the geographic and historical region of ancient Macedon, a Greek kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II.
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the Hellenistic period.
The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders.

Old Stone Bridge
Built in 1896, the Old Stone Bridge is located in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, and was built by Nimrod Woodward who lived in Atlantic Highlands nearly all his life. He was a mason by trade and built many buildings in the area, including All Saints Stone Church in Navesink. He was buried in Bayview Cemetary in Leonardo, NJ.
