Ayutthaya - Video Guide of Thailand's Ancient Capital City

Ayutthaya is one of the most popular places to visit near Bangkok. Read my full guide to Ayutthaya here:

Visiting Ayutthaya, Thailand, is one of the best day trips to take from Bangkok. It's Thailand's ancient capital city, second after Sukhothai. The city has a very long history with many ups and downs. It was overthrown by the Burmese in the mid 1700's and many of the gems and treasures from the temples were moved the Yangon at the Shwedagon Pagoda (another very impressive site if you visit Burma). I have visited Ayutthaya a number of times while living in Thailand, but a few weeks ago I joined a small travel blogger group and we toured a few of the most important temples, and I also snuck away for some food and refreshment! The Ayutthaya historical park is the most significant section of the city, an area where there's a concentration of temples and historical sites to visit. The city in now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The first temple we stopped at was Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล), a must visit temple in Ayutthaya. The temple is recognized by its huge chedi that leans a little to the side, sort of like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. At the site, you can then climb a flight of stairs to the middle level section that offers a nice view of the surroundings. Surrounding the temple are many statues of Buddha, most of them wrapped in orange cloth and in many symmetrical patterns. Just like Wat Pho in Bangkok, there's also a reclining Buddha, though this one made of stone and wrapped in yellow cloth instead of gold. I had visited the temple before, but had never stopped to see the palace of King U-Thong and his many roosters. After Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล) in Ayutthaya we proceeded to Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), a temple that's famous for housing a 19 meter high golden seated Buddha. The temple is a cross between traditional Thai and Chinese beliefs so there are lots of cross similarities and the temple is very Chinese Confucian in appearance. There are many section of Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), and you can spend some time walking around each section of the temple. It's nearly always busy and bustling with people, especially on the weekends. Finally, the famous Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ) is one of the most visited and well known temple complexes in the Ayutthaya historical park. It's the temple where the famous head of Buddha wrapped within the banyan tree is - that's always a favorite place for everyone to take pictures! The rest of the temple is not in that great of condition, but it's mostly in ruins. The temple is still nice to walk around for a few minutes.

Ayutthaya is hot, and when you are walking around the temples, you're going to sweat for sure! So be prepared for the sun and always remember to drink plenty of water. I also like to stock up on hydration by having a fresh coconut to drink the water. Finally, whenever you visit any city in Thailand it's important to eat and to bring back some of the local speciality snacks. In Ayutthaya there's nothing more famous than a sweet called roti sai mai (โรตีสายไหม), and if you don't eat this, many Thais will say you didn't even go to Ayutthaya. It's basically a thin crepe pancake that's combined with cotton candy like sugar, wrapped into a little taco and consumed. It is very sweet and full of sugar, but it is the taste of Ayutthaya and should be sampled! Have a great trip visiting the ancient capital city of Thailand!

10. Chiang Rai
The northernmost city in Thailand, Chiang Rai serves as the main commercial hub of the Golden Triangle, which contains the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. A busy town offering something for everyone, Chiang Rai is often used as a base for exploring the surrounding region.

Once just a quiet village in northern Thailand, Pai is now a booming town that is part of the Mae Hong Son Loop stretching between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. Sitting on an extinct volcano in northeastern Thailand, Phanom Rung is a Hindu shrine complex regarded for its outstanding architecture. Located near the village of Nang Rong, this temple sanctuary was built by the Khmer culture between the 10th and 13th centuries as a dedication to the Hindu god, Shiva.

Railay (or Rai Leh) is a small peninsula in south Thailand that is only accessible by boat due to the high limestone cliffs cutting off mainland access. These cliffs attract rock climbers from all over the world, but the area is also a popular attraction in Thailand due to its beautiful beaches and quiet relaxing atmosphere. Almost every patch of buildable land fronting in the eastern and western part of the peninsula has been taken over by bungalow resorts, and development is creeping up into the forest behind

Considered by many to be one of Thailand’s most beautiful wildlife reserves, the Khao Sok National Park covers jungle forests, limestone karsts, rivers and lakes in the Surat Thani province of southern Thailand.

Founded in 1350, the city of Ayuthaya is located in the Chao Phraya River valley in Thailand. It sits on an island surrounded by three rivers connecting it to the Gulf of Siam. King U Thong proclaimed it the capital of his kingdom, the Ayuthaya Kingdom, better known as Siam. Once declared the most magnificent city on earth, Ayuthaya was an impressive site, with three palaces, more than 400 temples and a population that reached nearly 1,000,000. In 1767,

Located in western Thailand and admired for its beautiful scenery and accessibility to national parks and waterfalls, Kanchanaburi is best known for the Bridge over the River Kwai that is linked with the historic Death Railway to Burma in which thousands of Asian laborers and POWS died during its construction under Japanese occupation during WWII.

Ayutthaya is a UNESCO heritage site.Lots of temples and statues to see.It's one of the tourist destinations when visiting Bangkok since it's only 1 hour and 30 mins away from the capital.We left Bangkok very early so that we can visit most of the interesting places.When we arrived in Ayutthaya we rented a tuktuk for 7 hours.The driver roamed us around and visited the must see places in Ayutthaya.It's very convenient to hire a tuktuk once you are there.Totally worth to visit the place.

Baan Kiriwong in Nakhon Si Thammarat Thailand

Baan Kiriwong is the kind of place where it’s easy to feel right at home. Located in the countryside outside of Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand, exploring this little village makes a great day trip for many reasons.

The village is best known as an ecotourism destination, and it was even awarded for such efforts in the 1998 Thailand Tourism Awards. The residents are mostly fruit farmers growing local fruits such as mangosteen, rambutan and durian. As such, the daily way of life is very laidback around here. You can rent a bicycle for next to nothing and take in the greenery and mountain views. There are also lots of cute cafés and restaurants where you can drink traditional Thai coffee or eat southern delicacies like fried chicken and sticky rice.

Making arts and crafts as souvenirs is another main source of income for Kiriwong residents. We went to a local fabric-dyer that makes and sells beautiful scarves, cloth purses and clothing. Everything is dyed organically using leaves and pieces of tree bark from around the region. Colorful scarf designs are made by freehand drawings using wax. The wax is removed by boiling the fabric, leaving a fabulous piece of cloth that can be used as a sarong, tablecloth or a tapestry for home. The scarves can be purchased here, and they are also shipped and sold around Southeast Asia too.

If you’re going to be in Nakhon Si Thammarat, make sure you stop over in Baan Kiriwong. It’s a local, authentic experience you won’t forget!

Solo Backpacking Bangkok, Thailand - Wat Poh, Grand Palace, Reclining Buddha, Longtail boats + more

Bangkok is filled with majestic temples like the Grand Palace and Wat Poh (The Temple of the Reclining Buddah.) Make sure to take a trip along the water on a Hang Yao (or Long Tail Boat) as well a motorcycle ride to get a real sense of Bangkok. My single favorite item in Bangkok was Wat Arun, also known as Temple of the Dawn. However, hidden beneath the beauty of this city are many people who are struggling just to get by.
